No, you just need to focus on the keyword you are trying to rank for and have good optimized articles. There's a lot of factors.

Certainly PR is huge, but there's way much more to it. PR3s can outrank PR6s for certain keywords if optimized correctly.

PR has little to know influence on how well your site ranks. It only indicates how strong the backlinks are(to some extent).

Instead of looking at the PR of your competitors, you need to look at the quality and quantity of your competitors backlinks.

Market Samurai is pretty good for this. You can also use a pro subscription of SEOmoz to see the backlinks of your competitors.

Now take a look at the types of backlinks they are building. Look at the PR of each of the links, the percentage of exact match anchor text links etc. Really break down exactly what your competitor is doing.

Once you have an in-depth understanding of exactly what types of links your competitors have built you'll know more about what types of links you should be building to beat them.

I always try to look at my competitor and beat them on both quantity and quality.

For example, if my competitor has 10 PR0 links, 15 PR1 links and 5 PR3 links, then I will try to make sure I build at least 30 links with at least a PR1-4. If your goal is to rank #1 in 4 months, then you know you need to build 7-8 links per month. Simple right?

Is this an exact strategy? No, not at all. However, it gives you targets and it will certainly get you close. If it doesn't get you the exact ranking you wanted, then simply repeat the process and see how far away you are.

If you ever find yourself beating a competitor on both quantity and quality then it's time to look into other factors such as on-page.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Then it doesn't really matter what PR your competitor has! It now depends on the number of backlinks (quality ones!) (You can have 2000 incoming backlinks, have PR: 0 and be at 1st place in google for any keyword.. Of course I am speaking theoratically, it depends on the word, if it has a lot of competitors..)

A PR6 site outranks my PR3 sites, he is at #1 and I'm at #3. It would be close to impossible for me to outrank them cause they are a huge authority and heavily optimized for the search term I try to rank for.

There is an exception though for very easy to rank keywords and that is a result of that no one optimized their page for it / try's to rank for it. In those cases Google don't know what to put at page 1 so they fill it up with authority sites with a high PR (most of the time).

My site , as well as the others, is an authority one. It has almost 7 years old and over 50,000 backlinks.. :-)

        That's a big-dog fight

Don't stick in mind that PR kills your competitors. What I want to suggest you is that go to Google Webmaster Guidelines and understand everything that you will read. It's a little tricky way but no methods are better from those that come straight from the horse's mouth.

Though, they will not give you a direct to the point ways on how to outrank your competitors, you will surely have a great idea on how to keep everything on the right track. But at first, don't focus first on outranking them for it will only make you stressed, just work according to what Google wants, and you will notice some good effects.

To give you an idea of what they want, they instructed us to make pages primarily for users and not for search engines.

most of the time, you'll find, your competitors are not properly using anchor text for their backlinks, I've seen this on SEVERAL occasions.

It all boils down to the average of 2 things; you need a better site and a better link profile than your competitor to outrank him, nothing complicated, simple equation that a lot of people over analyze.....
