Satelite sites linking to your main site

I am wondering, when you make satelite sites(blogs) linking to your main.
Is it necessery for them to be from different blog providers or it can be only one. For example :
1.blogger.com/myspace.com/wordpress.com/angelfire.lycos.com
OR
2.blogger.com/blogger.com/blogger.com/blogger.com/

so in 1. there will be 1 blog per site linking to your site
and in 2. there will be made different blogs on the same site again lining to your site.
yea you get the point. This is for SEO/SERP.

      I know that there are multiple good web 2.0 sites for blogs, but I am wondering, what exactly will happen if I use only one of those. Like there will be no reason to use 20 different web 2.0 sites if I can do 20 blogs from only one. Does this actually works - I don't know yet and I've found very little information.
