Is it bad for SEO to have your website in a subfolder?

For various of reasons it would be good for us to have wordpress blog in a subfolder (www.domain.com/blog) without having anything in the root on the server. Aka if you type in www.domain.com you are automatically redirected to www.domain.com/blog.
Does this hurt your SEO, comparing to setting up the blog in the root folder? I feel like it is a "weird" solution so before I go ahead with it I would enjoy some feedback on it.
