ok so i was on page 12 yesterday afternoon for my main keyword, by evening time I was on page 9 for my main keyword. Today I am nowhere to be seen for my main keyword. I havnt done any link building yesterday. All my other keywords are ranking with one moving up a higher position. Should I be worried. Am I being penalised? I was thinking of updating some fresh content on the page I am targetting and make it more engaging whilst still keeping it optimized. Do you think this is just a google dance and it will come back?

  • How old is your site? More than likely this is the Google Dance. Don't worry about it. Just gently start building some backlinks to your site and keep working on it.

I've had sites do this for 6 months on occasion but most of them settle down in the top 3 of Google page one.

Just start building some backlinks to your site and keep working on it. But if Google saw that you delete links that you bought before... its start time to worry.

Another way to make sure that you are not penalized is to type "site: http://yourwebsite" into google search box. If you're still listed, means that you are safe. It may just be google dance.

Just continue to build quality links & write quality articles. It should come back up.

I've had this happen to one of my keywords, it moved from page 10 to #10 within a couple of days and now it has completey disappeared from the top 100 for that keyword; however all my other rankings are normal.

Hopefully it's just a dance and it'll come back, 40,00 exact search keyword

    This is the important clue.

I blew a site out of the water with a fiverr gig (a three year old site at that!), and the way I know it's sand boxed is that ALL the keywords dropped off the face of the earth. ;-)

If some are up, some are down... that's the classic Google foxtrot.

Others please do feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though!

You don’t have any serious issue to worry. When Google changes its index after certain time period, page rank of websites get fluctuated. This phenomenon is widely known as Google dance. You don’t need to worry as it will be fine once Google will be done with new indexing.

Yes, when various google data centers all receive a lot of signals (backlinking) they become out of line and your rankings are being re-calculated, in this period some data center signals aren't being counted, and your site experiences what's known as a dance, it's basically google's algo figuring out your site's popularity on the web...

What most people seem to forget is that your position in the search engines is also a function of your competition.. Movement up or down can also be caused by your competition..Maybe their site is now improved..better backlinks etc.. therefore your site has dropped.. ( not saying this is the case.. but most people forget the fact that ranking is a competition amongst competing sites/pages and not just about your own sites/pages )
      Just my 2 cents worth..

Hate to link to myself, but I made a post about fluctuating ranks earlier called "Crazy ranking fluctuations today".

At the moment I would say your rank changes are due to Google tweaking their algorithm as opposed to a "Google dance" brought on by link building. Sit tight for a few days. Google are have changed how they value links and it may take a while for the dust to settle.
