Is it a good or bad idea to use own forum to linkbuilding?

I'm working on ways to get returning visitors for my website. At time being, I got an "affiliate search", where people can search for affiliate programs among thousands. (Over 40.000 last time I checked), and a forum.
The forum was quickly removed from the menu, but is still out there with a .. well, no PR now - it was PR2 previously though.
I was wondering if it somehow could contribute me to let the posts flow in (removing the links), and get more and more posts - more for the Google Crawler to read. I am aware it's useless spam, but would it somehow benefit my main side by having more content to the forum, or would Google eventually punish me for abusing the spammers posts?
Right now I got 172 spam-members, and it goes up by 2-6 a day.
Any input, because if it doesn't contribute, I may just as well remove the forum so it doesn't take up any space.
