Using your own URL shortener domain: Setup and impact question

Hi all

I am building a new site, let's call it 'mainsite.com'.
I created a twitter and a bit.ly account for it.

Now bit.ly allows you to use your own short domain instead of the bit.ly name.

So let's say I manage to get a short domain like: 'main.to' and configure it so that every time a URL is shortened on 'mainsite.com' it will use 'main.to/something'

1) My understanding is that using your own short helps keeping some link juice instead of giving it bit.ly. Is that correct?

2) My biggest question is: what do I do on the 'main.to' domain itself?
- do 301 redirect to 'mainsite.com' ?
- just have a blank page?

My main concern is that redirecting it to 'mainsite.com' will penalize me from an SEO perspective and appear as a gateway page?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

    shouldn't really matter

there is a degradation with each 301 but not worth worrying about
