Lots of ways are there to start your keyword research.

Have you tried Google keyword tool or any other tool available in the market?

    What are the confusions?

    Regards.

    OK.

You need to concentrate on long tail keywords and exact (not broad) searches in adwords

First you should decide on the pages you are optimising. Let's say it's a fruit shop called petesfruitshop . com. And Pete has a real shop in the CBD.

So the most obvious thing is to optimise for location

    So /aboutus.html

    MIght be optimised for

    fruit shop in sydney
    fruit shops in sydney
    fruit shop in sydney cbd
    fruit shops in sydney cbd
    fruit shop in cbd sydney
    fruit shops in cbd sydney
    fruit shop in sydney city
    fruit shops in central sydney

So there you have 8 keyword phrases to be optimised. What you are trying to do here is drive real traffic to this clients about page, so that they can get his address etc. You can also push it with Google Places.

Now if you're wanting to drill down on 1 specific term, well that's another story I can help you with when I get my head around this marketing stuff as I want to sell it.

Be careful with these types of keywords, because you will be competing vs Google Places as well... I'm not saying you shouldn't target them, but it adds another level of competition.

Keyword selection is so important, is defines the type of traffic you will end up getting on your site.

Keyword research takes time to find a good niche that is rather low competition.

How hard is Google Places to rank? Any tips?

I don't know much about optimising those actual listings, but they are definitely worth following up if your niche/site is relevant to a location.

I wonder how many 'places' listings need to be added for it to start showing for specific keywords.

A couple of basic things to help you rank better in Google Places are:

            1. Make sure the contact information matches the page you're linking to. I.e. Contact page. If You're using the home page, make sure address in in footer etc.

            2. Make sure you use div cards on your website so Google can match details easier.

            3. Make sure the address is exactly the same. For instance, a shop on a corner may list themselves on a website like, corner King Street and Bent street. Actual address is 200 King street. Make sure this is the address on the div card.

            4. Make sure business name is listed and not the keyword in places. Use the categories for this.

            5. Update products etc regularly.

            Hope that helps

Choose the keywords you thought best describe your services business. Choose keyphrases instead of a single word as per your niche. Choose the keywords on the basis of high search volume and low competition.

What do you mean by too much competition and how are you deciding what measures to use for competition?

I hope it's not just "competing pages" because that's not how to really check the strength of your competition.

Yep. That's a great tool once you learn how to use it.

it's a different way of looking at keyword research but can generate a TON of results. Here's a trick:

Let's say you're main keyword is "vacation rental"

Plug this into a text file and add each letter of the alphabet to the end of it. For example:

      vacation rental a
      vacation rental b
      vacation rental c

      etc...

What this is going to do is grab the Google suggestions for every single one. So "vacation rental a" will turn into 10 different results (most of the time) that start with the letter a. "Vacation rental anaheim" is one example. Another is "vacation rental agreement." It will do this for every single letter, giving you a lot of results.

You can go even beyond this, though. A suggestion scraper will take ALL of your results and grab the suggestions for those, as well. So it's going to find 10 more results for "vacation rental anaheim," "vacation rental agreement," etc.

You can end up with 20,000+ long tail keywords using this method.

Nice one JSP. This is quite helpful to know and worth trying out when I get time. I already have a site build around 1 keyword, but when I start ranking well enough, my aim is to be focusing on another or possible 2 other keywords, so this will come in handy!

          No problem.

As I said earlier, most of these keywords will get little to no traffic according to the Google Keyword Tool. But even if just 5-10% are worth your time (out of 20,000) you'll be pretty busy for awhile.

That is something you should have to research yourself. Whatever it is your searching for will be different from any examples given here, so once you have keyword results and the competition is worth going for, then check out the traffic rate.

Obviously it helps to go for 'Intent To Buy' keywords if your trying to sell something. Always give them a solution or exactly what they are looking for. With that, you can turn around small traffic numbers to a good selling rate in most cases.

No. In fact, most will have very few, if any. The key here is sheer volume. Having this many keywords gives you a real chance at finding a ton of gems / KW's you would have never thought of.

Like previously mentioned concentrate on exact matches using adwords keyword tool to see how much traffic you are likely to attract. Check to see how many links the competition has using a site like Alexa and also look at the page rank of your competing sites. You have to be realistic and concentrate on keywords with little competition at first. I usually concentrate on one keyword per page and optimise all of my pages.

          You're right God.

I think this is the fault of bot's like xRumer that are spamming every forum that they can find.

On the good side they bringing "backlinks", even if they are worthless and on the bad side, they are ruining great communities like this one.

They will give up eventually because those are only blackhat methods of making money that only work for a limited period of time.
