Does google take into account where the back links to a website come from? to be more specific, if 70% of a website links come from sites in India would it affect the pages ranking in the US? I ask because I would like to rank in specific countries which I do business, but through my reading I have not specifically seen this answered. For instance, if I want to rank well in the Dominican Republic, should I pursue getting links from Dominican websites, or will ranking well in the US based on SEO that is already done translate to other countries?

Thanks

kodshi, I can't agree with your second answer.. mcario should pay attention again to gain backlinks from high PR websites, not specially from Dominican websites. These specific country's backlinks could be from related forums or article directories, but Social sites like Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit are a must for each website. Also some of the most popular Article directories worldwide are worth a try... ALL of these backlinks would help his website to get a great SERP not only in .com Google, but also in Dominican Google

If you want to rank for a specific search engine your backlinks need to come from websites that are indexed in that search engine!

For example if you're trying to rank for google.co.uk yet none of the pages you're ranking for aren't even indexed within that search engine they're only indexed in google.in

then those links will only carry weight within google.in and not google.co.uk

Definitely you will get credit for getting backlinks from target country... but its not the deciding factor. When it comes to backlinking, relevance of web pages is the first thing search engines look for. If your backlinks are from relevant websites and not from the target country, even then you will get good credit.

    Now I am really confused.
This is not what I thought.
Submitting to regular businesses in the Dominican Republic will help but he should also focus on the high PR site submission rather than focusing only submitting to Dominican Republic sites

I'm having the same problem I need to rank in the uk, so I've been back linking from u.s link .gov. .edu. And from sites that are hosted in the us. I number 1 in google.com but in .co.uk page3. So Im trying to get links from the .co.uk. So I pretty sure that you need back links from sites that are from the country you want to rank in.

It depends what kind of business that you have...if its local in nature like a mum and pop store, then local links would work well for you...However, its always good to have a natural link profile from a wide range of sites within your field. If you listen to PR alone then you live in the SEO world back in 2002...Google has gotten away with it more and more since it has been abused over the year and the page rank number is not accurate anyways.....There are other more important trust metrics to go by nowadays if you want links that really pass on the link juice to your website. In other words you have to go deeper to determine the true quality of a back link...

Yes its good to have backlink from the specific country which you wanna target in, for this instance you might wanna have backlinks from Dominican websites..

And it's also good to include your country/city name in your domain name as well.. for instance, interiordesignSingapore.com .. that will most certainly increase your SERP in country which you're targeting.

    Just a headsup..
