Does Google count Facebook backlinks/ likes?

We've all heard that Google is trying to incorporate social signals into its ranking algorithm. This would seemingly include links and likes from Facebook, links from Twitter, and Google +1s.

However, I'm confused about how Google incorporates these signals. The majority of facebook pages are private, so if someone "likes" your site or links directly to your site, then Google can't crawl it. So this shouldn't add SEO value.

On the other hand, Facebook business pages are public. On my site's home page I have the facebook "like" button which links to my Facebook business page. Does the Google crawler actually notice or care when someone clicks on the "like" button? Are 1,000 likes better than 100?

For Twitter links, my understanding is that 1) they are nofollow and 2) Google doesn't even crawl them. So these don't add SEO value.

Sorry for the long post - I'm just trying to understand how to incorporate these different social signals into my backlinking strategy.

Facebook links can ONLY help you get traffic, nothing more. As glock67 said, they are no-follow, so you should pay attention to do-follow links to help you in your SEO

Actually a lot of insider information from google sort of indirectly states they DO in fact takes google backlinks/likes tweets +1s and all of the sort into their rankings

and that the sway they have is becoming more and more effective

It may not be true, but I sure think it is

In you ever used the so called opensiteexplorer you may notice the twitter/facebook/twitter count columns! Google may not count these as Dofollow links, but SEO is much more deep than just Dofollow-links. Many other factors plays a significant role, like social media shares and so on. People tend to just blindly look to Dofollow links. But proof is that many other things can influence too!

  • NoFollow links still give you juice. Michelle MacPhearson proved this a while back.

Do Nofollow Links Count - Redux - From Idea to Empire

Yes this was using NoFollow blog comment links, but the principal stands.

Secondly, yes I believe that links on FB pages will help. Are they NoFollow? Yep. Will they do what a link here in the WF will do? Nope. But as mentioned above, they will also get you traffic through fans of the page.

Do follow, no follow or whatever I think Google is using Twitter and Facebook data/links some how. Although I don't think it trumps authoritative inbound links. In the long run Social Media links are important to have but I wouldn't get carried away with them. When resources are limited and you can't afford a full time Social Media person it's still better to focus more on gaining links from sites that are harder than hell to get links from.

According to me Google start giving importance to social signal in their ranking algorithm. Face-book provides no follow link but Google is considering as an important social signal to mark your page important .

I can't say about facebook, but yes, links from twitter will better your SERP rankings. However, if we talk about G+, google will consider links coming from G+ .

It's not only about the links anymore. Bing and Google both openly admit that it even plays a factor if your site is just being talked about without being linked. Links still work but Google is aware that this tactic has been used way too much to manipulate SERs.

If you believe FBook doesn't play a factor you are far behind IMO.

Here's the inside scoop. Nothing like a like, tweet, facebook
link, etc. on its own is worth crap.

What google counts is the sheer number and quality of
things that they can see. Like a tweet. They look at numbers
and quality of those that that have retweeted. Getting Joe
Shmo with his spam-50-followers-following-2000 will get
you squat. Your twitter account does have PR and authority.
If "enough" quality tweeters tweet a page, that's a plus
      to google.

Ssince most stuff on FB is done behind a login,
with flash, or some other script,
very hard. Putting links on a FB page in the stream is like
blog commenting with a big fat nofollow. That's not going
to get you squat. Putting a link in your personal stream
is seen by no such searchbot anyway. That's true for
anything with a login. But then, it's a script anyway.

What would be good, is if you have a FB group or page,
and enough quality people liked it, AND the link to
the group or page was in your activities or other. Then
      that's a link to your page/group. Again though, it's
about quality and numbers. The links to your websites
on your profile page that can be seen without logging
      in are nofollow.

      Twitter beats FB hands down.

All theses signals are helpful in the sense that it helps to spread your content to social networks. From this point of view your content could become viral. This is better than nothing and helps to get more traffic. Now Google takes care of your social authority and it should be part of their ranking algorithm.

Encouraging user interaction is now much more important than before. Whenever a user posts a link to one of your articles on their Facebook wall, or Tweets about it to their friends, Google sees that as a “vote” for you. Since Google is striving to provide its search engine users with the best, most relevant websites, it only makes sense that Google will give respect to a site that is generating a lot of social activity.

They help, just not near as much as a high-quality backlink. If I'm posting here anyway, why not? I choose not to jump on the bandwagon of people who sell IM services in their sig. Some are good but for the most part, it's all garbage to get people's emails so they can sell them affiliate IM software.

This is the thought process of 5 years ago. You're right, they're NOT traditional backlinks however, Facebook is the biggest website in the world, even bigger than Google. Why would Google not choose to incorporate some aspect of Facebook into their algorithm? The only reason they would choose not to do it is so their +1 system would have more pull.

Well they did not included it because they are not getting access to it, other wise we wouldn't have seen G+.

"Count" can mean a number of different things. A good way to look at it is - if Google can see it, it is taken into account. Social links are definitely part of the entire scheme, but their importance depends on the niche, I have found anyway.

It is confirmed that Twitter tweets, Facebook likes and Google pluses are playing a significant role in ranking your site in search results. Both Google and Bing have confirmed this with. Also the social rank of the person sharing the post is also considered. I wrote a post on this. You can read it here: Tweets & Facebook Shares Do Matter In SEO

No SEO value since it's nofollow. But FB links brings great traffic when your content goes viral. Twitter, social bookmarking and Facebook is usually why content goes viral... atleast for me.

I use a plugin to help get my content likes and it brings me some good traffic.

Facebook links/like, twitter and Youtube backlinks all are a MUST now. Even they are no-follow they help to rank a site. I have a site that has only no-follow links and has PR4, isn't is strange? While Google has said in the past that they ignore nofollow, if you take a look at your backlinks in Webmaster Tools, you'll see there are nofollow links in there too.

  • There is lot of confusion about no-follow. They do not contribute to one's Page Rank but they do contribute to one's SERPs so they are very useful. If a site only has do-follow links, it is Penguin's cue to strike as in real world you get both kinds of links. Facebook and Twitter links are quite valuable.
