Does keyword density matters?

I have my site with good content and proper keyword density. Some of the sites with almost no keywords on homepage rank better than mine for my targeted keywords. It makes me doubtful about importance of content and usage of keyword in it. Does it really matter?

Not really. I'm ranking first page for a very competitive keyword with a keyword density of 0.5%. As long as your site is about that topic and has quality content, that should be enough in terms of density.
I do have the keyword in the site title and description.

There's this question that I've encountered earlier, and I'd like to share it here. "Why should you optimize beyond what's needed?" That isn't exactly the question word by word, but you get my point. Anyway, I really don't look at keyword density as something that's really important, but I only have to keep in mind what's the right amount of optimization that I can do for a site. You need not mention your keywords a lot of times. What you need is to share great content and give the visitors a great experience in your site.

But what I have noticed is that my competitors sites are not even having good content.

Keyword density matters because it is an easy measure for keyword repetition and helps users access and engage in your content. It is not the biggest ranking factor (by a country mile), but keyword density is completely in your control and is one of the building blocks upon which other techniques are balanced.

  • When you have good content on your site, then keyword density is given less importance. When content is not up to the mark then keyword density plays an important role.

How about when I have none of these two at all on my home page?

    Does keyword density matters?
Only If you are selling a keyword density (stuffing) product, or an affiliate for a keyword density (stuffing) product.

As far as SEO keyword density (stuffing) is a load of BS.
