Sorry for the grammar. english is not my first language but I do hire writers for my SEO campaigns so dont worry So before someone bash me with grammar and spelling, please move on. This thread is for a solution of the recent update.

Lesson here don’t use short term gain strategy. Well, with SEO always update your strategy but as much as possible don’t go down the fast lane

With the recent google update many websites were hit including some of our client's sites. Sad to say that only client's with low budget were hit by the update. Why sad? it’s because they are small business trying to grow.

My client's with high budget with their campaign off course brought in more traffic. Why? For example one of my clients is selling a CB product (not an affiliate). Then in his niche there are minisites (an affiliate {of his product} of CB selling his product) with private network links and those minisites got hit and he outranked them so he got more organic traffic.

It’s sad that this update is meant to kill spammers but small business got hit as well.

The hard part is we can’t tell our small client's that it’s because their small they got stepped on. lol We are still trying to create a solid plan for our small client's. We did just use private networks for them so there was no problem if they only paid us $200 per month.

So for the solution

On-page - too much optimization can lead to penalty. One of my clients is a lawyer. Not all his articles are keyword rich. Why? It’s because he write most of his articles himself. He gives free advice to those who visit his site. Its questions only he can answer and he has low SEO knowledge so most of his articles are written just based on how he can truly help legally.

He even wrote about an Iphone app for documenting legal stuff. So the main point is that his articles are user targeted not search engine targeted.

Believe it or not other lawyers love to link to his site so it helps a lot because we tracked the links and they are free high quality links.

Create user targeted content and people will naturally link to your site. A few links help a lot.

Mind you, some competitors have used xrumer etch blasting this lawyer site but it was not penalize.

Off-Page

The first step is to check what works for your competitors. Spy on them like checking their backlinks. The hard part is if they have thousands of backlinks. By this time use your common sense. The wrong question to ask is “where are the links from?” instead try asking “what type of links does he have out of the thousands?” does he have variety of links?

This way just by skimming through the links your competitor have, you will have an idea what he is doing with his campaign. Then ask yourself if you can afford the type of links the competitor have? (this is of course knowing you already have a high quality content. Not too much seo optimization and user targetd. Lets just say your on-page is near perfect already.)

If you can afford the links he has then its ideal to try and copy his link sources. If you need to contact some webmaster then contact them and ask what are the requirements or necessary steps to do for your site to have your link placed on their site. Yes, folks these manual seo work is the real SEO strategy and not some spam links. So please evaluate everything before you try to go and charge.

This is the main reason why we provide evaluations to our client’s competition and market. We let them know the time frame of the campaign.

I’m tired and I will continue this tomorrow. But you know where this is going. Real SEO is not an overnight and 1 push button (private network submission) work indeed.
