Similar Keywords in Google

So I had a quick question before I launch a certain niche site.

The niche site will be focused on a certain keyword that is similar to a very popular keyword.

Not very descriptive I know so let me give you a hypothetical...

Lets say "cheap laptops" gets 100k local searches and is very competitive.... its basically a monster that's way too difficult to break into with a niche site, but there's a related key word "frugal laptops" that has many fewer searches, say 2k a month.

When you check the top 10 results in google for "frugal laptops" it comes up with some high PR pages but only 1 or 2 on the first page actually use the exact term "frugal laptops", and the ones that do have low PR and few links, all the rest come up with "cheap laptops" in bold.

I know its a hypothetical but if you create a site very focused on the less popular "frugal laptops" keyword can you compete or will Google just know generally that frugal and cheap are the same word and they'll continue to point searchers to the websites that focus on the "cheap laptop" keyword?

    There was actually another post here that helped me with part of my answer I think.

    Here is what I am currently doing using my previous hypothetical key word terms.


    I am looking at the top 10 results for "frugal laptops" and searching their website for the actual term "frugal latptops" to see if it pops up in the title in bold in H1 H2 ect.

    Then I am going to backlinkwatch.com to see how many backlinks they have and how many backlinks have the anchor text "frugal laptops"

    The concerning part is all of these sites have a lot of backlinks. Around 1000 or more so far but most of those backlinks have the anchor text focused on the more popular keyword "cheap laptops" with only a few "frugal laptops sprinkled in.

    On page SEO seems to vary btw from somewhat nonexistent to fully optimized

    What else should I be looking for? I am starting to think this is too competitive.

      All of the results seem strong but the last page listing on page 1 is just completely whacky. It's PR 0 and doesn't contain "cheap laptops" or "frugal laptops" anywhere that I can see on page or any of the anchor text.

      It was also made last month


      I should be able to beat this one. I'm actually shocked that there is so much discrepency. Out of the first 9 results I would say I might be able to beat 1 of them after years of work, and then here comes the 10th result and I feel like I could beat it next week

      Going to the second page there are again lots of tough competitors... man I have no idea why google chose this particular site for the first page. From everything I know of SEO it makes no sense.
