So I've got long tail pro telling me one thing, SEO Quake telling me another (usually very low) and backlinkwatch.com giving me a third number (usually way high)

I like the free way of scrapebox. They have a new backlink checker add-on. No idea where they are pulling their data from though.

I used MajesticSEO, but got rid of it and now use ahrefs, which I am very satisfied with. The one thing you have to know is that they are all going to give their own figures, and the accuracy of each isn't predictable. You should stick with the one that you think is the best, and just use it as a general gauge for whether or not your backlinks are growing or shrinking, but none of them are going to give you a 100% definitely accurate answer. Unless Google opens a service, anyway .

Well thats tough to do when I use a paid service like Longtail pro and the creators general rule of thumb is to look for less than 10 back links, then I go to backlinkwatch or ahref and theres hundreds if not thousands. (This kinda makes me upset)

I've only been at this game about a month so far and I'm already asking myself

Why isn't there a keyword tool that tells you not only how many backlinks but also the stength of the pages providing the backlinks (or maybe an overall score thats easy to understand) and how many of those backlinks have anchor text matching the keyword you're researching....

I feel like there is still a lot of room left for development with these tools.

Long tail pro seems OK so far at best... and many are turning away from market samuai... secockpit maybe but its expensive ahref is kinda expensive... I will probably buy all of these tools once the business is off the ground but for now I'm trying to learn how to do it on the cheap and then add tools as necessary.

Do backlinks matter if they come from PR0 blogs? I am figuring a lot of these sites got to the top using companies like BMR. They have just a ton of crappy links but it is getting them to the top of google for keywords that get 50k+ searches a month so its working for them

I use Seo Spyglass to analyze backlinks myself. You are never going to get all the backlink data from any one tool, so just choose one you like and stick with it.

At the beginning of my journey with backlink checkers, I was very upset and confused that none of the numbers ever matched. They were never even 'close'.
In fact, often when I even used Google, then went back to double check something after initiating a campaign, in Google's tool, the results would be MASSIVELY different

My advice would be, pick 1 or 2, stick with them until you see consistent inconsistencies. Then move onto the next ....
