Google WMT message/Panda update - deliberate timining?

Hi all, I was the lucky recipient of one of Google's love letters mid last month. As a result I have noticed certain pages drop for certain keywords across my site - no out of the top 100, but drop nevertheless.

Because the drop is not too severe, I'm left wondering if it is the result of the bad links being devalued or as a result of the panda update. Pondering this then led me to wondering if the timing of the two issues - mass sending of the 'Unnatural links' message and the Panda update - has been done deliberately so that webmasters are left reeling and not knowing what the cause of their drop in rankings is?

Or am I just being cynical?

This is something myself and my business partner have also considered. It is definitely not a one penalty for all situation which leads me to beleive that it is purely a change in the algorythim- perhaps devaluing certain types of links (over and above the blog networks affected).

It certainly keep everyone guessing - so a good strategy for Google

well the thing about this is that your site got penalized if you got message for "unnatural links" and there is 0 chance that your site will get to first page again unlit they lift up penalty after you submit your site for reconsideration if your site meet Google's guidelines..this message is straightforward you need to remove all the bad links ASAP and then submit a reconsideration request doing this can be very hard if you don’t have the contact details for all the links you have built. Lots of spam sites have no way of getting in touch with them to remove the links...

If you got the unnatural links message and your rankings dropped, there's really no reason to speculate what caused it. Your pages will be filtered until you fix the problem or until the penalty expires.

I'm not entirely convinced of that - I've read of people who have ignored the message insomuch as they don't submit a reinclusion request or remove existing links, but rather build high quality links and their positions have started to return.

        I wouldn't believe those claims.

But hey, it's your own time and money you'd be spending building quality links that are hard to obtain on a domain that is already marked as being outside of Google's guidelines.

I take your point and agree - it is hard to know who to believe. I received the notification over two weeks ago and although my rankings have dropped, it's nothing catastrophic yet *touches wood superstisiously*

Remove the links that are violating Google terms & wait to see where you land - then build evergreen links (that will always be within the T&Cs)

So I hear a lot of conflicting information regarding the google wmt unnatural linking message. I too got this message shortly after BMR was taken down. It certainly wasn't a majority of my link building effort but it was enough to lower the rankings on pages where I used it heavily (around 250 bmr posts total spread out over 7-10 pages). My site has nothing to do with a shady niche, it has 300+ pages of original content and is pr4 over 2 years old. I'm still ranking very high even #1 for some terms, but not the main homepage terms. I'm not pretending everything I did was whitehat, I ignorantly used some services from this forum as I'm i've only been concentrating on seo for two years, lesson learned the hard way. So the question is do I clean up as much as possible and file a reconsideration request or just wait out the penalty? Would like to hear from someone more informed than me, please don't comment if you really don't know. Thanks everyone!

Indeed. Unless my rankings plummet further, this is the approach I intend to adopt.
