How significant is Alexa rank?
Is it worth to pay attention to Alexa rank and to try to improve it?

Alexa is way out and doesn't truly reflect a sites traffic. It offers some other uses though.

I don't think you should care about it. It measures only the traffic you have from those that have alexa's toolbar installed, so it doesn't reflect the real traffic that you have.

It doesn't matter, really it just shows how many visitors you get compared to other websites.

I wouldn't pay attention to it

Very correct. Recently I had a website which I created just a bit over 2-3 weeks back and which has already gotten Alexa rankings of 500,000.

It is accurate to an extent and can be helpful with tons of things (like demographics, audience information and search terms etc). So keeping an eye on things usually works out well.

Alexa rates sites based on the amount of traffic they receive and it should never be a thing of concern. If you don't receive any traffic to your site you will be ranked the least but if you are getting the most traffic among all the sites on the net you will be ranked 1st.

Traffic is one of the most important things to consider for your ranking, am I right?

Alexa is a measuring stick for how much traffic a website gets. It's measured by people who have the Alexa toolbar installed. For example, if 10 people have the Alexa toolbar installed and they visit Google the most, Facebook second, Yahoo third, etc. that means that Google would be ranked #1 while Facebook is 2nd and Yahoo is 3rd in Alexa rank.

The only way to improve your Alexa rank is by getting more visitors to it. Alexa rank does not tell you how much traffic a website gets, however if your site is ranked 95,487 (for example) and your competitor is ranked 93,412, you can assume they slightly get more traffic than you.

Alexa traffic rank has some obvious flaws, being that if a website has low traffic and it's owner uses Alexa toolbar - assuming the owner frequents his or her website regularly it can artificially boost the Alexa traffic rank of that website with skewed results. Following the same logic, Alexa.com could have a inflated Alexa rank seeing how people with the Aexa toolbar would have a natural propensity to visit Alexa.com.

Cause vs Correlation is a very important factor in SEO. You have to know that just because most sites ranking #1 for competitive terms might have a high Alexa rank, it does not mean in order to rank #1 for a competitive keyword you would need a high Alexa rank.

    Hope that helps.

Alexa does not give you traffic details. It is a very
lousy estimate that is used for entertainment purposes.

Very easy to pump up your alexa via a traffic exchange.
Especially an autosurf. In fact, some of the top alexa
sites, like trafficswarm, are just junk sites.

A measure of mindless traffic is useless. Alexa is such
      an animal.

Why would traffic be an indicator of rankings?!??!?!?!

I can buy all the lousy traffic I want. And what does
it get me? An alexa ranking? Man this is 2012
people. Wake up and smell the linkbait.

I completely ignore Alexa rankings when it comes to SEO. However, when it comes to selling a site, that is a whole different story.

It's not. I don't include Alexa Rank as a factor when evaluating my own site.

Alexa is heavily country dependant. I have a dutch site with 200 daily visitors and another .com site has 10 daily visitors. The site with 200 visitors has 10.000.000 alexa rank, the other site 2.000.000

Don't care about alexa, the only thing you should care about is Google PageRank.

Don't care about Google Pagerank, the only thing you should care about is Domain Authority.

Although that isn't 100% true either as DA is gathered by having as many unique domains referring to your site and after spamming one of my test sites with 100.000's of scrapebox comments and xrumer profile links the rankings all dropped but my Domain Authority hugely increased

All those metrics are kind of worthless on it's own, PR is easy to create with some Tumblr reblog/redirect or Youtube comment trick without giving it any strength, DA is easy to create by spamming tons of blogs/sites. Alexa rank is easy to create by buying traffic. So better to give up focussing on such stats.

Better focus on quality links and a divers linkbuilding plan.

ps: the test site is PR5 and DA:29 and its ranking nowhere and isn't helping to rank my other sites either. It's not deindexed but it sure is some kind of sandboxed.

Alexa rank will be increased automatically if the traffic of your website increases. Alexa rank is just an estimation about number of visits of your website comparing to other sites and actually its not important a lot for search engines and users of your site.

Alexa Ranking is not a thing you should pay attention to. It just shows you more info about your visitors. Try to work on your SERP and don't think about your Alexa Rank

    Alexa rank...

Use a plugin that refreshes your website everytime. Or a bot that views your site with proxies and you can easily higher your Alexa rank. Now, I don't recommend you should do this.

It only indicates that it can easily be faked. Some people on Flippa do include Alexa rank when considering a purchase of a website. I won't worry too much about Alexa

There is no value to Alexa. Except for maybe some newbie IMers, do you know anyone who installs the toolbar?

Alexa is a valuable tool as long as you and your competitors are not manipulating it. Sure, only alexa toolbar users add to the rankings of sites, but the more users overall you have, the more accurate alexa's numbers will be.

Example, say you only get 100 visitors per day, but 5 of those are alexa users and very active on your site. Your alexa numbers will be inflated because of those users. But if you have 1000 or 10,000 visitors per day, a few very active alexa users won't effect your results as much, so your results will be more in-line with your real results.
