Do you think that long web page titles are effective if they are laden with specific keywords? I am under the impression that long titles do not matter until they are potential by virtue of the presence of targeted keywords in them. What do you think?

I stick to having titles around 70 to 80 and it's worked well for years for me

You should use as many characters as possible for both your title and meta description.

    Keywords:

Include your keyword once in your title, maybe sprinkle in a secondry LSI keyword.
Include your keyword twice in the meta description.

The most important part of your title is to make it enticing.. Remember this is the first thing someone will see when they find your site by browsing the search engines.

I agree that longer tail web page titles can be extremely effective and click through rates for me are generally better in this context.

More content = More possible keywords

Remember to think about the user experience as well though. More content might be better for search engines but not always for people.

I think it can be effective, not just for SEO purposes, but also to the person searching for your keyword. Think about it. When you put something into google, are you going to go to the site that has a title that is somewhat similar to what you put in the search box, or are you going to go to the title that is basically word for word what you were searching for?

Nicely descriptive titles are great. Titles which are too long are not used by Google (do not benefit SEO), and are truncated in the search results. The max useful length is about 70 characters or so.

I always prefer to keep my title within 60 characters and of course my title includes my main keyword.
