I remember reading not too long ago that Google was disregarding, or at least placing less emphasis on, a metric that it had relied on for some time. I can't remember where I read it, may have been Matt Cutts' blog (increasing age does that ).

Was it ever announced what the signal was that had been lessened? I kind of get the impression that it may have been domain name relevance, as that would correlate with a number of sites I'm involved with.

Or am i talking rubbish?

    It had to do with how they use anchor text. Most people assume it was probably doing away with giving more emphasis for bolded or italic anchor text. Something of that nature. It couldn't have been anything big because none of my rankings really moved after the change and anything bigger then that would have had a major SERP impact.

      I think you're right..

      They said a "characteristic" it depends how you define that, but I see it as a visual attribute like bold, italic or underlined.
