Keyword in Title, Url, Meta Title, Meta Description, DMZ

Try a free copy of TrafficTravis.

This all are onsite SEO and besides this you have to do off site SEO tools also. Thus concentrate more on quality backlink and if don't know about that prefer backlinksindexer as i have good trust on this.

seo spyglass will show you the "worth" of the backlinks from your competitor for his website or keyword. It really gives you good information, and an "inside look".

Just build good and natural backlinks. Your competitor could have 10000 junk backlinks to his website, and you could outrank him with just a couple of high PR or EDU or Gov backlinks.

There are tons of seo tools that will allow you to do just that, I use traffic Travis still because it gives me just what I need to know but also quancast and sites like that will give MORE data on their users as well so that all helps. Keep in mind you compete with the top ten or well that's all I care about beating.

  • Email them. Tell them you're a big fan of their business and that you think their sites are the greatest and coolest and most awesome thing that ever happened to the Internet. Mention that you're an IT student with a minor in business and marketing and that your scholarship might be discontinued if your grades go down this year. Also tell them you can become extremely violent when you don't get what you need, as proven by your psychiatric evaluations. Then, tell them you need for your school paper the list of keywords they're targeting for their SEO campaigns, the keywords they're targeting for their PPC campaigns, the traffic and conversion percentages they're getting from their SEO and PPC campaigns, specific details about their SEO and PPC campaigns, etc. If they give you these details, good for you. Otherwise:

Take note of the URLs of the top ranking pages of your competitors in Google for your target keywords. Take note of the domains of your competitors. Go to Majestic SEO and gather backlink profile details of their sites, such as the number of their backlinks, where those backlinks point to, the keywords anchoring those backlinks, the URLs and type of sites where their backlinks are found, etc.

Hmmm... When you sleep with webmasters, in exchange for backlinks, then those are bed backlinks. Take note that Google may consider these bed backlinks as unnatural backlinks. Seriously though:

Bad backlinks are backlinks found on spammy sites or sites with hateful, malicious, illegal and vulgar content. This is because you wouldn't want your business, your website and yourself associated with these types of sites. Google may just possibly consider these backlinks as 0 value backlinks...

Bad backlinks, in the eyes of Google, are unnatural backlinks. Keep in mind though that Google might be unable to accurately know, with their algorithm, how you got those backlinks, because their algorithm couldn't possibly know if you paid money or beer or kind words for those backlinks...

Backlinks may also be considered by Google as unnatural backlinks if they're found on pages unrelated to the topics and sub topics relevant to the keyword used to anchor the backlink and to the content of the linked page. More so if the entire site has content unrelated to the keyword anchor of the backlink and to the content of the linked page. This is quite logical to assume, because for instance, someone viewing content about vegetarian recipes couldn't possibly gain any benefit from a linked page offering content about the many ways you can cook pork...

We use a number of tools, but the one we use most is Semrush, it isn't free but it is pretty accurate.

We've given a number of clients quite a surprise when our report contains much the same data as their analytics setup, ppc adverts etc, assuming they had them in the first place.

Inside information, but not, if you know the game.

There are a lot of free tools, but from experience most of them are crap at backlinks, I've seen some say a site has 1000 backlinks, but the same site in webmaster tools shows 156,000. So I would take any backlink information at face value.

Page rank once confirmed gives a good idea of domain authority.

It really depends on your aim, as for competitors, why worry about something you can't change?

You should be looking at their content, and doing better, in an easier to understand way.

Build good content on your own site and Google will do much of the rest, then you can go back to keeping an eye on your competitors as and when required.
