Do backlinks still work for ranking???

Hi,

I know google has changed and all. But do we even need to still build backlinks? If so I was wondering is it smart to "reverse engineer" the websites ranked on the first page of google for the keyword im targeting?

I figure I will use market samurai to look up the websites on the first page of Google im trying to rank for and see where they are getting their backlinks from. Then I will build 3-5 new backlinks per day to my website using my keyword anchor text 50% of the time.

Does this sound like this will work or will google penalize me for building backlinks? Thanks

    That shouldn't hurt at all.

I build hundreds of backlinks to my sites a day and I don't get penalized

Unfortunately that is so true, but google can't evaluate every site personally. Luckily it isn't the only factor, but it makes it hard for new sites to get organic traffic for a while.

Backlinks are pretty much the only factor when Google determines the ranking of a website. Content plays a role as well, but as long as your content is unique AnD DOEsn't LOOK liek This. Then high PR backlinks will get you to the top of Google in no time.

so should I be building about 5 backlinks per day then on average? I mean I have a huge content site that im growing on average of 3 pages per day. Right now its only 2 weeks old and has 40 pages to it. So im thinking of just building 5 backlinks per day to random pages on my website. Sound like a plan?

Don't worry about number per day.

Focus on high quality links from related websites. But yes, build links to all your pages and just not your homepage.

my goal here is to rank for all sorts of long tail keywords. So I should just build backlinks targeting these keywords right? Isn't it like 50% targeted anchor text and 50% not targeted? I mean if I keep building 3 pages per day eventually I will have hundreds of pages. I will start seeing long tail keyword traffic no matter what.

The more words you're using, the less of a role pagerank plays. For example, a single word such as "ipod" well be ranked only by PageRank.

      Example:

However if you're trying to rank: "Best ipod accessories for kids"

Then it's possible that a PR1 article named, "Best ipod accessories for kids"will show up at the top of google.

50% for a non-targeted keywords is not really necessary. You can just use them like 10-20%. What I usually do is to target different long tail keywords but still relevant to my niche.

If you are targeting ipods, You can use different long tail keywords but as much as possible, do not put your main keyword (ipod) away. You can include that also.

Other keywords for diversion like click here, or just a mere link can also be good to look more natural.

Somebody already did that and triggered an unnatural link notice. You are in an info bubble. Log out and search again.

Use your keywords as anchor text but you should mix it up. I have given you an example that if you are targeting a keyword like "ipods", you can make it like "best cheap ipods", or "affordable ipods for you". I mean mixing it up without putting it away.

Again, do not afraid to use "click here" or some other anchor text, or just a mere link for better diversion.

Backlinking definitely still works for ranking. Is in fact one of the top ways to increase your ranking. The key is creating quality links from sites related to your niche.
    Good luck.

I estimate that the importance of backlinks can be changed in next years but they always has an important role in ranking results. So just try to make strong backlinks for your websites to rank them high in Google.

Google uses a series of algorithms to determine the ranking of websites. Quality content is important but why do so many of the top ranked websites have a high PR?

Getting in the top 10 for anything to do with iPods means you'll be competing with Amazon, Best Buy, eBay, and CNET. All of which have a PR1 - PR4. Even "affordable ipods for you" has all PR1+ web pages in the top 10.

Backlinks are still working at the moment. It is still how Google evaluate your website based on the number of "recommendations" you have. But make sure that the backlinks are of High Quality and not some low quality links.

Also from what I know, if you build too many backlinks in a short period, Example 200 links in a week. Google will penalised your website by putting it far below the ranking. It happened to someone I know. And of cos I do know of a remedy to counter that. You can actually "appeal" to Google if it penalised your website due to too many backlinks.

        Hope it helps.

Its not so much the number of back links you have these days, its more about the quality of your back links. It use to be where google would penalize you for the number of back links building in shirt period of time, but not so much now.
