Hi I have an ecommerce site which currently sits at around position 6 for a popular 2 word keyword phrase. Unfortunately number 6 doesnt quite cut it, with increasing local results the traffic is quite bad. I am trying to rise up the rankings and would like to get to number 3 or 2 but to date I cant seem to get any higher. I have checked out teh backlink profiles of teh sites directly above me and on paper i should be kicking their ass, i also have a higher mozrank etc. I have a lot more higher pr links but I am not moving any higher. I cant understand how they have such a high ranking.

For ecommerce websites does having a number of relevant paragraphs of text on your homepage significantly help with your ranking?

Does anyone have any tips for moving up the first page in fairly
competitive serps?

What niche are you in. I can help a lot if I knew what niche your ecommerce site focused on.

If you appear to be kicking a$$ on links then maybe it's how you've distributed your links and targeted your market reach.

Relevant content leading into your product is always a good thing. But, it's not just the about the "homepage" when it comes to ecommerce sites. In fact, with ecommerce sites, less emphasis is put on the homepage and more emphasis is placed on the actual product pages (inner pages).

You need to add a blog to it

if your site is My Clothing Store .com

        add My Clothing Store .com

Add relevant articles, reviews etc - if you use wordpress and say post 2-3 articles etc a week you will def see a jump

Also on your blog ad your twitter feed so its constantly being updated

Also look into adding deeper descriptions, further info to your products - esp if you are just copying and pasting the manufacturers descriptions

Have you compared your on-page SEO profile to your competition's? Off-page isn't everything.

The difficulty is with ecommerce sites I feel having a lot of text on the homepage takes away from the look of the site, which is why I don't have any on my homepage. However if having relevant text on your homepage is very important for ranking purposes in ecommerce searches then i will have to do this.
For some reason a number of sites are beating me in the serps yet their backlink profiles are very weak, so I am trying to work out the reason why this is happening. I don't know if it is relevant text on the homepage, age of other sites, age of links to other sites etc.
Has anyone any experience of being in a similar situation as this is very frustrating?

Have you go through your "On-Page" factors completely, you are focusing on Back Links but have you concerned with On-Page that's a must for being higher in Rank.

My experience with e-commerce site, each sub categories must have inbound link from external site. By doing this, it can effectively target each product niche.

When overall categories have PR, good impression and CTR, your site will stand a better chance to get rank on high competition keywords.
