There is this keyword I wanna rank for, the competition is pretty easy. But wanted to know if I could rank a .info domain on the first page for that keyword? The reason is there isn't a .com or net. or even a .org available but the keyword is pure GOLD!

Has anyone had any luck ranking .info???
#info #rank

yes you can, domain extensions don't matter to your ranking but when the last time you seen .info in search results? and if it's there do you really trust it ?

use Available Domains and get yourself a .com

If I use a dash in between my keywords will it be harder to rank for that keyword? For example penut-butter-jelly-time.com ???

no, dashes won't hurt the rankings as Google considers them spaces between words. You can also check the Google Webmaster Blog as it has an article written on add dashes to domain names

I would not get a .info as I have found they are harder to rank and even if you do like already said they are not trusted.

I also stay away from hyphens and x, y, z's at the end as I think they look crap and unprofessional.

Go with a stop word at the end of the domain like help, shop, info ect...

If it is an easy keyword you shouldn't have any problem ranking even if its not exact match.

I own thousands of .info sites and they are just as easy/hard to rank as any other domain.

The myth that Google treats .info domains differently than others is just that...a myth.

Does that mean the #1 site on google for a google product, PageRank,
      is not trustworthy?

How about the New York Subway system. Are they untrustable?

I don't know where you people get your info from, but it sure
      isn't from any respected sources.

Maybe it's people's sources that are untrusted.

Yes, some of my. info domains are ranking first - third for some popular / competitive niches. Domain extension makes no difference unless your website is country specific in which case try to pick .us or .uk for example

Very true. .info versus any other domain is irrelevant. What matters is that your keywords are in the domain (toward the front of the domain name), and that you have a good quality links. There's a .info that I know of that is REALLY competitive that has stayed in the top 3 in the SERPS for the last 3 years and is still holding strong regardless how how many updates there have been. If you do it right, you have nothing to worry about!

Yes you can rank with .info domain.

Well, you have to note that URL is one of many factors which decides Google rank for a particular keyword. Other than URL there are very important factors like Content, On page optimisation and off page optimisation - Those should be given more heavier consideration than put more time on deciding about domain(url) name.

All domain extensions are equal, in fact I did a case study, and ranking with a .info, check my signature.

I guarantee anyone here who has ranked a .info would have been able to do it with half the backlinks if it was a .com/net/org. Just fork over the extra 6 bucks.

Yes you can absolutely rank .info domain, what really matter for Google is the quality and relevancy of the content of your site. You should focus more on providing good lenghty content, your on page and off page SEO etc..

I have ranked many .info sites, it all depends on the quality of your content, the keywords your targeting and the links aimed at your website. Given time I guess you should not have any problems.

I have seen PLENTY of .info's ranked up top so you should not have an issue.

For the hyphens, I haven't used any with my domains so I couldn't help there.

I have several .info sites that are ranking well for certain keywords and I agree that there doesn't seem to be a difference between the ease of ranking a .com and .info but I would add this caution.

Whether real or not, there is a perception that .info sites are not as trustworthy as .com, .net or .org sites. That may translate into a worse-performing site for several reasons:

    1. People may be less likely to click on a .info site than a .com site in the same position in the search results. Remember, ranking in the SERPs is only important for one reason - the traffic it brings to your site.

    2. Other websites may be less likely to link to a .info site because of the perception of lower quality. Fewer natural links means you will have to work even harder to get the site ranked and keep it ranked.

    3. If you ever want to sell the site, it appears to me that most .info sites get much less interest, and therefore lower prices, than a similar .com site would.

I have a number of .info sites and domains but have only bought one in the last couple of years. I would typically prefer a KeywordKeywordSomething .com than a KeywordKeyword .info even though the latter is shorter.

Any new domain is going to be extremely difficult to get ranked within a week, even if the competition in your niche is very low. Keep going with your blacklinking campaign for another three weeks at the very least before you assess how your site is performing in the SERPS. And then, even if you have managed to rank within a month, you will need to continue to build backlinks, albeit at a slower pace.

okay, was afraid that i was banned or something, but after penguin i has startet over and want to do it RIGHT now! No more "buy 50.000 backlinks" and all that kind of crap!!

I try to get good articles on web 2.0 and wiki links with social bookmarks, and have now added google + button and facebook like

No, you definitely haven't been banned, otherwise your site wouldn't be showing up in the SERPS at all. Best advice is to take things slowly. It's better to be a little bit too cautious when building backlinks (especially with a new site) rather than do something that you later regret. As it sounds like you've already discovered, it can take a long time to recover from a Google penalty, and in some cases it is near-impossible to do so.

Why do people think they should be ranked instantly?
      Hard work and patience.

I still don't get this mentality.

Nobody can judge good quality content. In fact, that's
so overrated and misquoted, it's not funny anymore.

You want a .info that had hard work? Try doing a search
for pagerank checker or similar. You want a .info that
instantly rocketed to the top? Do a search for ny subway
      schedule, new york subway, etc.

  • Yes you can rank .info domains. But lets say that your website is mywebsiteurl.info and you start to get some traffic. When someone wants to go back to your website and they decide they want to type it in guess what there probably going to do? they probably will type mywebsiteurl.COM

    see what im saying?

This is the bigger problem when using a .info. Because of this, virtually all of my sites are .com even though .info's rank just as easily.

Do you think it takes any longer to rank an .info vs .com/.net/.org with all other things being the same? Up to this point all my sites have always been the EMD with either .com/.net/.org. Now I'm starting new sites and for many those are not available for some I see the .info is there. But debating if I should go with the .info domain or a .com version by adding an extra word (and if this really effects the time it will rank compared to a .info EMD)?

        No, not at all.

What I will say is that I steer clear of EMDs. I find them to look spammy and unprofessional. Since I want people to come back to my site on their own, I stay with brandable .COM domain names that people will remember.

I know you do the brandable site type for your Amazon affiliate ones, but how about for just Adsense sites. Same thinking here or .info would be OK with these types of sites?

When you guys are saying "trust" a site what exactly are you referring to? Someone buying from your site? Believing what you have to say? Not clicking on your site from the SERPs?

Since I get most of my traffic from organic search and if my .info site is ranking #1 for it's keyword are you saying people will not click on it due it to being a .info domain? These sites are more information sites with just Adsense so I don't know why everyone keeps bringing up the trust issue.
