Hi,

I've decided I want to have my domain as:
HTTP my website DOT COM
not
HTTP WWW my website DOT COM

NOTE: I'M NOT ABLE TO POST LINKS AS THREAD COUNT TOO LOW!

I realize there is no overall proven benefit of having one way or the other but I prefer going without the www!

So I host with hostgator and my questions:
1) Is there anything to do physically within my ftp I need to do to ensure it will show without the www?
2) Should I be able to do the 301 redirect from www to no www within hostgator?

Please let me know on this - as I'm just starting the process want to get it right.

Thanks

you can use your domain name control panel (DNS settings) to configure your domain without WWW. Rather than using NS records to point your domain to a hosting provider, its better to use "A" records. And also remove the CNAME record "WWW" and add the same record "WWW" at "A" records by using the hosting service providers IP address.

Yes you can remove the www. cname record under "advance DNS zone editor" in the cpanel. Please be aware that it is always better to have the www. as if someone types it in to get to your site it will direct them to a 404 page.

It is possible to set the site to revert to http:// even when someone types in www. though by creating the redirect.

Are you using Wordpress or something else?

If you have WordPress, simply go to:

    Settings->General

and type in your domain name without the 'www' in the WordPress and Site Address URL fields.

Ya It is possible now. You can create your domain without putting WWW in your domain name. You don't get any problem regarding browser. Your domain name opens on all of the browser.

You need to do it from .htaccess which is located in your file_manager inside your cpanel. Put the followings inside your .htaccess-># RewriteBase

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(.+)$ [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://%1/$1 [R=301,L]

*** The above one is for apache server.
    Hope this will help

    Thanks
