I've already posted various threads on this general topic of targeting foreign countries. I want to make sites in Spanish as it is my second language and the competition seems to be lower. I currently live in the U.S.

When I search Spanish keywords in Google, I very rarely see country-specific domains(.mx, .es, etc.). Pretty much everything is a .com/.net/.org/.info. I also can't tell what country(Mexico, Spain, Belize, etc.) a specific page is associated with most of the time. I have been told that Google has slightly different SERPs for every country. Before I go buying expensive .mx and .es domains, it would be really helpful to know:

If I build backlinks within a certain country only, am I likely to rank in other Spanish-speaking countries as well?
Should I try to just rank in the Spanish language in general? (Monetizing w/ AdSense)
Or is it best to pick one country and focus on it exclusively?

There's obviously a huge difference in Global and Local Searches in Spanish.

I have built several sites in Spanish and have never focused on specific url's. I have used .com/net/org and all have ranked on first page and on different countries as well. I really don't see the need on focusing on one country unless it is business related.
