Blog comments are an easy way for your sites to be updated without any effort from you, and Disqus / LiveFyre comments don't become part of the HTML on your site (it just relies on a snippet of JavaScript code).

Is it true that blog comments need to be part of the HTML to contribute to SEO?

As far as I know, you need server side scripting such as PHP and a database (or XML/text file) for blog comments to be output to the HTML. This has its drawbacks, for example there can be security issues like SQL injection and it could be easier to spam your blog. (I'm aware of ways to protect your database from SQL injection). One thing I'd like to do is limit the amount of comments that can be inserted per day, so that no one would put 5,000 comments of garbage for the fun of it.

I just want a free SEO friendly commenting system which has a lot of different features and options to choose from. Can you recommend anything.

Most of the modern commenting system doesn't allow a link back to the commenter's website. The only way to achieve what you need is to use the default wordpress commenting system and do custom coding to achieve whatever features you are looking for.

One of the good custom built commenting system that I love is available in Webmaster's Guide to SEO Trends, Social Media & Technology. Look at any of their post and you will see how the guy has basically programmed additional fields with extra nice features. Hope this helps.

Comments no longer need to be html only, Google bots can now read Java and related things.

    hi hongkongseo,

put your keywords in name section and put your URL in URL section. This is the common way to get back links. Don't use any simple words like thanks, helpful post, and more in blog commenting.

Blog Commenting can be an excellent part of an SEO strategy. You need to really provide value and contribute though. That is the only way to make them worth their weight in gold.
