So how do we SEO these days?

I haven't done seo in years and it looks like it's changed a lot since then.

I recently got banned from FB ads so i guess i'm going to have to give SEO another try. Any suggestions for promoting a clickbank product via seo?

  Its gonna be very difficult in coming days to promote products or services. Google has come up with new algorithm, many high PR sites are banned. And Google will keep you in dilemma forever.
  
  There are many reasons behind this "banned" issues. Like Unnatural Links linking to your site, Irrelevant Links ( like, your niche is Mobile apps and you are taking links from sports/music), Duplicate or thin content, Too many inter-linking page link (like, if you have www . xyz . com and your inner pages www . xyz . com/about and within content you are linking to main page 3 4 times)
  
  In short, as you are going to start SEO after long time, I suggest you to take a look at all updates and new algorithm..

Since you prefaced your question by saying you haven't done SEO in years, you may not be aware of how ironic the timing of your question is. Given the massive algorithm change that Google rolled out today, I think that Legit SEO is speaking for a lot of people on this forum right now. His answer was probably more sincere than it sounded.

In short - you may not find anyone tonight who can honestly answer your question. The rulebook just got thrown out the window in the last several hours.

Right now Google is making a lot of very public noise and actions concerning some popular backlink-building schemes that were designed only to affect the search rankings.

White hat SEO is still fine. Keep everything mild, even for on-page SEO -- write for humans, throwing the keyword and LSI keywords in once in a while (I'm currently recommending using the primary keyword about 2% on the pages). Page titles and URLs still matter greatly.

Backlinks are still king... BUT Google is checking a lot more for "unnatural" linking patterns. You need a wide variety of backlinks - different keywords, different pages on your site -- coming from lots of different KINDS of sources - not all at once -- to look "natural" right now.

Bottom line, SEO isn't dead by any means - but its not as easy as it was for a while.

Nothing new... some of us remember when stuffing the keyword on the page over and over and over would cause a page to rank highly.

Google changes, we adapt. Resistance is futile.

yes you can promote CB products with SEO, but now a days its more difficult than before to rank higher on targeted keyword.
