      Many, over 3000, were hand done by myself on wiki answers. I also got listed in a lot of directories, both free and paid. I did indulge in fiverr gigs because the competition is so tough, but not the 10,000 link stuff. Mostly article writing/spinning for my niche.

      I don't know how else to compete with sites that have been around for 10 years and have a million+ backlinks though. I'd bet my life that they used automated link building techniques also to get to that level.
