To determine the best keywords You can use the free google keywords tool.
The Keyword having maximum searches per month and minimum search results is the best to choose.

David's post begins to touch on it, but it is much more complicated I am afraid. You need to look at the top 10 results and see how competitive they are. This will tell you whether or not you can compete with the keyword. The number of search results isn't an indication of competition, especially since Google can't accurately assess how many results there really are.

If you already have an existing website, check out the search volume for your main keyword in Google Adword Keyword Tool. That will give you a bunch of related keywords you can target.

First go to google keyword tool and make sure you uncheck everything and check exact on the left

Then pick a keyword that gets a high search volume

NOW it's time to research the keyword to see how easily you can rank in the top ten!

I recommend using The Ultimate SEO Keyword Research & Competition Analysis Tool - serpIQ.com

Best of luck to you it's a lot more complicated but after some practice it becomes extremely easy.
