I have a site that relies on a uniquely created search widget for my target market to use. My bounce rate varies between 20 - 60ish % for my main page that has the largest widget on the site.

I do have written/unique content on the page but that's hardly part of the user experience since the widget is the main focus. About a dozen of my keywords for this site have tanked over the past month, and i have done minimal on-page SEO for the site. It makes the site a lot more natural, so i keep it that way. The metric for user satisfaction is pretty much noted in the bounce rate which never goes past 60% for targeted traffic.

It's troublesome for me to think that my on-page SEO caused the lowered rankings, but I can't really say I've done anything wrong with promotion either. This is one of my authority sites that i have babied from day one and now it has minimal income because Google thinks it doesn't provide a "quality" experience.

My basic inquiry in brief: Does content really matter for on-page SEO even if the targeted market doesn't actually need to read paragraphs of information to attain what they are on my site for?

Effective On-Page Optimization can be carried out considering below points:

Proper domain name (URL address) related to keyword relevant to every individual web page.
Proper Image optimization with keyword related image name, alt tag is important.
Every page should have relevant tile, meta tag, keywords and description.
Place most important keyword phrases in the beginning of the title within 65 characters (including spaces)
Use most important keywords in Description within 145 characters (including spaces)
Use 8-10 Keywords in meta keyword tags (within 170 characters)
Proper use of H1, H2, H3 & other heading tags with trying to place the important keyword within heading tags.
Make use of bold, italic and underline for targeted keyword within the text content area.
Proper use of bulleted list to make content easily readable.
Make clean and clear text based navigation.
Unique and quality content with maintaining 3-5 % keyword density.
Avoid use of graphical link image as the text within is not readable by crawler.
Maintain good internal linking including html footer sitemap useful for visitors.
Add social profile or social networking buttons along with online or live support buttons.
Adding google map in contact or address page.
Don't use hidden text or hidden links
Don't create multiple page with same content
Add RSS Feed link if provided domain host blog.

So considering all the above points if you have done On-page properly it will work strong on overall SEO Score.

Also consider New Google Policies and its Local Ranking Factors:

    1. Your physical website address matching/listing the city where you're located.
    2. Manually verifying your ownership of the company's Google Places page.
    3. Having proper category associations for your page and citations.
    4. Having a large number of "traditional structured citations" for your business (on sites like Internet yellow pages and local place aggregators).
    5. Having your address listed on your company website, and make sure that address is crawlable.
    6. Having a well-ranked (PR) company website.
    7. Having high-quality inbound links to your company website.
    8. Having your phone number listed on your company website, and making sure that phone number is crawlable.
    9. Having an accurate local area code listed on your Google Places page.
    10. Having your city and state listed in the page title for your Google Places landing page.

The items listed above can be treated as a checklist for establishing bare minimums for local search optimization.

If I am searching for an online calculator that does centigrade to Fahrenheit I would only care that the widget tool that I am using is accurate, rather than that it has relevant written information about the process i am using.

I don't think having a certain amount of content should be relevant to a search if the search query has nothing to do with gaining information from reading an article or body of text.

I am currently unsure of what Google wants in terms of quality relating to websites not necessarily centered around a lot of written content.

    • The problem you have is that the search engine can't tell if a widget is good or not just by it being on a web page. If there is not enough text on the page it needs to know what the widget should be indexed under. For on page seo you need to make sure your title and urltarket the phrase you want to rank for. Also, internal linking from other pages in your site with those keywords. Then you need to build some good links from authority sites
