Hi WF!

Like most of you I use the All In One SEO plugin. When completing new posts do you complete the Wordpress Excerpt or plugin description and does it matter?

I don't care excerpt and description, as it is automatically taken into meta description, I have installed "light seo" plugin which is helpful for seo stuffs.

So are you saying the Description and Excerpt is pointless in terms of on-page SEO?

On every post you don't need to enter detail. i just use title and description for the homepage only and it works well on all of my blogs. many of my blogs are on top on many keywords even after the latest penguin update.

          Hi

The first thing you need to do is find out if your theme shows the excerpt. If it doesn't then you are wasting your time filling it in.

Personally I focus on getting a good title tag, description tag and on-page SEO before concerning myself with the excerpt.

My WP theme doesn't display Excerpt by default. This is something I have to enable via Screen Options. I've never really bothered with it to be honest as I've never had problems outranking my competitors before but lately (more so in 2012) I'm finding that websites are taking longer to rank and it's much more difficult to get onto Page #1. And I'm haven't changed anything. Still target keywords with <100K competing pages.

The Description is what search engine visitors see when searching so I feel this is very important. I will usually craft this one carefully (with a few keywords thrown in) in such a way as to make it look appealing to a potential visitor so that they will click through to my site.

For sites where I really don't care, I don't bother since AIOSEO will automatically take from your first bit of content for the description.

I believe the Excerpt is what goes on your site on the category page but I think this may sometimes be theme specific. Obviously I don't use this one very often but a lot of that would depend on the type of site as well as the size of the site.

Unless you are working on an autoblog-type site, I would definitely at least write your own Description, geared towards potential visitors NOT the search engines, unless the first couple of sentences of your content is THAT good and compelling.

The more text you write, the more text for Google to index. Simple as that!
