Validation should be checked at the time of development. It is not mandatory but good for seo. Every developer should know basics of SEO. Every web design company should adopt basic on page seo techniques while coding.

I believe it is not necessary as I have checked some sites and most of the sites are having some errors and warnings but it is good to have some error free sites.

Search engines, well there's only really one, do not
validate html. That's not their job. It's your browsers
job to display a webpage properly. html errors are
very common. Some errors are not really errors anyway.

Old browsers, ca. 1997 used to be a pain, as they had a
hard time with errors, even had little pop up window
warnings. I can't even find the error list tab on my
      current firefox.

New browsers are very forgiving. If your page loads fine for
you, 99.99999% of the others see it just fine.

It used to be like a game back in the day to be error free.

But I have never seen any error notations in google SERPS,
and plenty of sites have errors. I assume if you check the
WF, there would be a ton of errors that just don't matter.

You can even make webpages today without the first
< html > tag. Your browser just goes along for the ride.
