If you are like me, and a beginner at online marketing, you might be wondering what the "basics" of online marketing might be.

When you learn to write a story, you learn the dramatic structure. When you learn the drums, you learn the rudiments.
And when you want to learn how to make money online, you learn basic methods to get traffic.

I haven't done anything with online marketing yet, but I would like to just lay out all the things I have researched and learned so far.

Now that is it summer break, I would like to implement the following, which I think is the basics of making money online:
------------------------------

If I had to explain online marketing in one sentence, it would be "Bringing in targeted traffic to your website, and making them perform a desired action".

So where can you get targeted traffic?

There are many sources of traffic, and the most popular one here at WF is Google.

Getting traffic from Google is good because the people who come to your website gets there because of the search terms they have used. This means that your traffic is already targeted.

And once they get to your website, you can lead them to your squeeze page, or click on your adsense ads etc.
-----

How can you rank your website on Google?

Google's algorithm is a secret, but many brave SEO's have figured out what works and what doesn't over the years.

So basically there are two type of optimization for your website.

One is on-page optimization, which is pretty basic straightforward stuff. You can just Google it to see what it is. If you look around SEOMoz's blog you can probably find a pretty good post about it.

The other is getting backlinks. Other websites have to link to your webpage in order for you to rank on Google!
You can't be in this business if you are a hermit!
You are going to have to network with other webmasters, or create AWESOME SHARABLE content in order to get backlinks! This is a creative endeavor! A lot of deep thinking will be involved.

---------

Once your webpage is ranked for the keyword you desire, you WILL be getting quality traffic.

Once you have traffic, you have to somehow convince your audience to do a certain action by using copywriting, design, etc.

--------

Online marketing is so deep but I feel like I've only just scratched the surface of it. A lot of experienced online marketers are probably saying "NO ****" to what I have just wrote, but for beginners, this will be giving them a clue of what they are headed towards.

So here it is, here is the basics of money making that I will implement.

Learn how to create your own websites and save money.

Read everything you can get your hands on.

Work on ONE project at a time. I think this is one of the main mistakes people new to this business do - start many projects and never finish them. Pick one thing, be it promoting Clickbank products, Amazon - any affiliate marketing, writing - article writers, whatever your talent is, stick to one thing until it works and then start something new.

Good thread OP. Thanks for posting.

This is what held me back and prevented me from making any progress or money..Lori is exactly right! Focus on ONE thing then move on to other things once you are successful at that.

Stop thinking in terms of making money. Start thinking about building a business online. Provide a service or product that people want. Do it better than your competition or get in front of more eyeballs than your competition.

Google is a traffic source but not a dependable one. Paid traffic is a good traffic source. An email list is a better traffic source.

Traffic is the easy part. Making conversions is the hard part and is where you make your money, so pick a product you can stand behind and sell the **** out of.

Agreed. To this day I STILL bounce around from time to time. Even though I know it's much better to focus on just one project at a time.

I think we all do this to some extent.

      Lori is right.

One of the big mistakes that many SEOs are making is that jumping right straight into a 15k race without even participating in a 5k ones. Get the point?

Focus on one project but make sure that you can handle it based on your capacity. You will surely have a hard time in handling a money site with 30,000,000 competing pages.

My point is, start and focus on niches with low competition and make things work for you. Just like a race, start running for a few miles at first until you have the capacity to run lots of miles.

      Cheers!

Good luck! I remember my early days of learning internet marketing. It was very exciting and it still is! It's a constantly evolving industry and that's one thing I like about it. I would hate to be in a static career that doesn't change much.

At this point you're doing the right things... READ READ READ WATCH VIDEOS READ. That's what you gotta do. Try watching the Google Webmaster Youtube channel as well as the SEOmoz whiteboard friday videos.

If it's older than 2010, don't bother watching or reading it.

Keep a notepad with you and write/draw all your ideas in it the moment they pop up in your head. Whether they are feasible or not, that doesn't matter.

Sometimes you'll get an idea that looks really good and once you've researched whether or not it exists you discover that it doesn't and it could be a gold mine. If you're new, some projects might look daunting. But since you have it in that same notepad, you'll get back to it 6-12 months later and have the energy, motivation and knowledge to work on it.
