Cutts calls it a success? I'm not sure what planet he's living on but after Penguin Google's search results are broken and then some. Real sites with real quality content are suffering. This is hands down the crappiest update I've seen. See this article as but one example:

I agree totally. I've been getting much more quality results from yahoo and Bing.
It almost seems like google has lost their way from pursuing quality search results to just trying to punish people who do SEO.

Yep, weird old sites that haven't been touched in 5-10 years are showing up in the SERPS and it makes no sense. This Penguin update isn't about quality at all.

This is the Internet. Logic is Futile

One the one hand, I agree that Google has been losing its way what with these manic updates and such,

But in all honestly, the fact that older pages benefited from penguin is one SMALL step in the right direction.

All of my sites over a year old saw a big serp boost. Keywords I never even pushed for are now topping the serps. Go figure.

I do, however, agree totally that the first page for WAYYY to many search terms is flooded with crap from yahoo answers and that kind of drivel, while quality sites that obviously took the owners a long time to develop and promote languish far behind.

Anybody care to to weigh in on why the heck that's happening?

I read it & I am sure they are talking in tongues "again". I think they will always have updates to hurt the small guys, NOT big brands or Wikipedia. All this does for Google is scramble website owners to get on 1st page no matter what, and the quickest way is Adwords. Owners think should I pay this small SEO guy $600+ /month to maybe get my rankings back or put it into Adwords. You may be doing SEM very soon.

Funny how today, at my business address, I got unsolicited junk snail mail, from Google to use their Adwords program. I never give out that address either and it is not listed in Google places. So, they got it illegally or in a less than user-friendly way.
Yes, they have to make profits like crazy as they areon wall street. Don't trust me, trust a wall street traded firm.

Your address is not private information. It's on your county plot map, for one thing, as well as dozens of other places of public record. They can also extrapolate it manually if necessary. Bottom line, it's probably been on junk mail lists since long before you ever occupied it.

Whats funny is people think that just because certain authoritative sites got hurt by Penguin that it was not a success but those sites probably were spamming backlinks.

Maybe some of the sites were spamming backlinks but that doesn't change the fact that google replaced some authoritative sites with crappy ones.

A lot of the people that take the time to build backlinks also take the time to put together a quality site as well. By punishing people who used BMR and ALN google has sent some quality sites to the nether regions of the rankings and is now ranking total crap content for some valuable keywords. I would have to disagree with Matt Cutts if he thinks that is a success.

Amen! Don't punish sites for promoting themselves, punish them if they are crap, period!

Google will never admit that they dislike the small guys who they regard as parasites.

They will never admit to basically wanting businesses to use PPC.

They will never admit that they inadvertently screwed up many seach results in order to bring this about.

I think Google Penguin or is more or less like Google Panda but with more eye on Original Content and Remove Spams from search engine so everybody should now more focus on its content and delivers best one.

Oh, Google claims Penguin was a success? You don't say!

Google has always claimed that their latest algorithm update was all the rage. That hasn't/won't change.

However, what has changed is the way that SEO works, and most people have completely missed that. Lazy linkbuilding and content creation is over. People need to begin to think like a search engine, what factors can they analyze? What factors SHOULD they analyze? It's clear that sending a million links to a single URL with a single keyword is unnatural. But yet they do it anyways.

I hate to break it to some of you, but 20% keyword density is absurd and completely unnatural. Regardless of how you are selling it to yourself.

My EMD's I bought 2 months ago are flying high. Never mind they're pretty junk.

My quality sites lost rankings for big volume keywords. In the top 20 now you'll see those crappy scraper sites that just show domain information or that similarto.com or something that shows websites similar to the site you're interested in.

They called it a success because their intention was to reduce SERP for websites with spammy links. Inevitably it hit sites that had quality content on them but had a link building system that is just not seen as legitimate.

The best thing you can do is to save the drama for your mama, and start to improve on what has happened.

If your Adsense model worked before, all you need to is to change the backlinking a bit.

SEO still works, and the changes are more than uncomfortable, but you need to find a new way on how to monetize the business and make proper changes.

Has anyone here changed their backlinks anchor text for existing backlinks which are pointing to your site and seen a ranking improvement after Penguin?

I was just wondering if doing this had a positive affect because the Penguin case studies emphasise a lot of importance on anchor text diversity and having less than 60% of the anchor text using "money keywords".

However, i've seen sites which are currently page 1 on Google for their main keyword and have their backlink anchor text mainly focused on the keyword they are targetting to rank for, so I don't know why Penguin didn't affect them. Maybe possibly the volume of links wasn't high enough so Penguin only triggers a penalty above a certain amount of backlinks?

People have been doing good with their rankings without using their keywords as anchor text that points to their money site but rather used it to tier2 and tier3 links.
