backlink question

If you have a link to a section of your site, would that count as a backlink to the main site address or the sfds.com/extra-thing-youve-linked or both?

    Its an internal link. Internal links are actually important, you want the visitor to be able to get around the different pages of your site easily and Google recognizes that.

    It does not qualify as an external or inbound link though. You need links from other sites for that.

      Sorry, I meant that the link is from a different site but it is pointing to a page on my website but not the website's main index title page.

        The link is a backlink to the page on your site it is linking to.

        Depending on your internal linking structure you might be getting some link juice flowing to your home page also.

    Yes, it is counting an an internal link to your home page and it has good effect on your ranking. You can see and check internal links of your sites on your Google webmaster tools too.

    its internal link. Page rank is determine by internal link and external link, so the more internal link you have to a page, the better page rank won will get.
