The short version is where you have two websites websiteA.com and websiteB.com - if you 301 redirect websiteA.com to websiteB.com you are telling google that websiteA.com no longer exists and "the company" has been taken over by websiteB.com.

301 redirection is permanent redirection from one url to another.
For example if your previous website was a(.)com and you wanted to change it to b(.)com , you would implement a 301 redirect from old to new so whoever typed your URL would automatically appear at your new URL.

That's right. But after the redirect, there is possibility that the two website a&b both appears in the search result, for a period of time.

And one situation to use a 301 redirect is that you want to direct all the visits and the reputation weight of website A to Website B to help B improve the page rank.

A web server function where an old url can be redirected to a new one. 301 Redirect is a "permanent" redirect status indicating that the resource has moved permanently.

If you have moved your domain from a.com to b.com, you need to tell visitors that you have moved to new domain. 301 redirect will take them to b.com domain automatically.
