Just wondering if anyone has any ideas how to investigate why a website would drop from position 1 (Been there for 4 years) to about page 10 in Google. (Signficant Drop)

Is there any way to find out what is going on?

Look at your backlinks via Majestic SEO, or if you know where your backlinks have come from, you'll already have the answer.

If the backlinks are profile links, comment spam, blog networks etc, then that will easily explain the drop.

Could you please explain how profile links and blog networks are considered spam?

The poster you referred to didn't mention spam in relation to those, he said:

But be that as it may, you must be kidding, right? How are profile links NOT spam, exactly? If you register on my forum, web 2.0, whatever and clog up my resources, with the sole intention of dropping a link, forcing me to spend precious time deleting these profiles, I call that spam.

As for blog networks, well, they are certainly a form of webspam, since they have nothing of value in terms of content, existing solely to provide backlinks, and have no place in the SERPS.

Not being sanctimonious, just giving you your explanation.

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

DISCLAIMER: I have used blog networks (though am definitely getting away from that, post-Penguin) - I just justify it to myself that it's relatively "victimless" as it is done on blogs created for the purpose, not on some innocent person's site. I still think it's webspam of a sort. As for profile links, NEVER did that except a few manual links on profiles of relevant forums where I am an active participant, which is the point of those links anyway.

Don't forget that Google Panda is a rolling update, meaning he/she could have just as easily been hit by Panda instead of Penguin.

Word of advice for the future by the way: follow my cardinal rule for doing SEO. Here it is:

The more rankings with different keywords, the less risk, and thus the better off you'll be. Then ranking changes won't hit you so hard... unless you're a spammer with a spammy link profile that is

Google Penguin has focused a lot on the backlink profiles this time. Test have shown that if your backlick profile is made of more than 60-65% the same anchor text, it is considered webspam and sanctioned accordingly. Check if this is the case and adjust accordingly. You can also check your Google Webmaster account for any warnings from Google you may have overlooked.

If you feel you have been wrongfully sanctioned by Penguin or have fixed the problems breaching Google terms you can submit your site for reconsideration at a special URL (I have too few posts to be able to post a link, sorry)

    Hope this helps

Make sure that you have verified your website with Google Websmasters tool. If not then go to webmasters tool and click "Add a site". Download the HTML code and upload it on the website between <head> & </head> tags. Then click "verify" button.

If you have already verified your website, visit Google Groups and join Webmasters central forums group. After you join that group, you will see "Post a question" on top. Ask them why your ranking was dropped and they will send a few spammy links. You will probably get the reply within 2 hours. Get backlinks removed from those websites and you will gain the ranking again.

Penguin is looking for content and on page SEO. Are there areas where you can improve? What other keywords are you targeting? It would be the Google dance if your website is newer to the rankings.

Penguin update for sure... but I feel change is on the way, as I am observing some increase all of a sudden.
