Spoke to google on the phone about SEO , This is what they said

Hi

This is something i have overlooked when it comes to onsite design for my website. My sites went from number 3 for a 60k search to nowhere, So i phone up google in the UK.

They were willing to look at my site and tell me why i would not be coming back up in the search engines until i made some changes.

This is probs basic stuff to alot of you but i seriously overlooked this.

Ok, on my home page there were about 4 affliate links, or bridging links i think they called them.

Also on my site there was a sign up now page that linked to a internal page on my site but basicly had a banner to a affilitate site with a little content.

So first of all they recommend i cut this down to just 1 affliate link.

They said the join now was misleading also

So basicly it is best to have your own product or service on your site.

I then tried my luck about talking about backlinks, and i said, the person i bought the site off has loaded alot of backlinks to the site, could that of been a issue also. He said well we take into consideration of the domain names age. If you get alot of backlinks all at once then it looks fishy, but we will give the site the benefit of the doubt for 2 weeks, and said, links need to come in steadly and consistently.

Also if a website gets refused twice by adwords then it can also trigger the site not to get indexed again as a manual review is done by the adwords team.

So it looks like i need to do the following

1. Of course unique content
2.Not to many affliate links
3. Minimum of 4 pages
4.Backlinks built consistently and dont come in massive amounts then nothing again for a week or two. 5 a week something like than

That is what they said to me, It could be to put me off the scent but they seemed pretty genuine and i was suprised at how helpful they were to be honest.

Maybe this will help some of you

Right! Somehow, I don't believe this. Google from what I hear is basically impossible to get in touch with. Usually they email you when there is a problem not vice versa

Yeah. Like any numnut who answers the phone is some expert,
knows how the algo works, knows how to tweak your site
for the algo, etc., etc. etc.

I guess you forgot to mention the real answer:

"Nobody knows if your site will ever come back. There's
this little thing called competition, and we probably
already replaced your site with a better one.

And if you do make it back, then, what? The person
you replace is going to call me and get the same answer?!?!?!"

I don't know what you people are smoking, and most
assuredly do not know where you smoke it.

But look at the responses here. Complete BS to BS.
But some truth tossed in for good measure.

You are a bit mixed up. First, there is no dofollow. Second,
nofollow does not mean not seen. Nofollow was not meant
for that purpose. It signals an untrusted link. Why have
untrusted links on your page? Google is not blind to
nofollow, and any "SEO" person would know this.

wait what, if a site is denied for adwords it can trigger a manual review/penalty for SEO? that would be huge news

I also had deposited some credit to adwords, and as the site kept getting refused i said i only want to spent it on promoting this site, so they did want to get the site passed in the event i spend more money also i guess.

            Oh fogot to add,

It is best to create a separate google webmaster account for each site and also if possible a private proxy for each one, If you need to have the webmaster account verified by phone or sms, i think a different number for each account, And when you sign into the webmaster accounts make sure you use a different ip address for each of the set up accounts.

Google themselves did not say that but that is what i am surmising as it the same thing happened to all my sites from the same google webmaster account.

Guess it could also trigger them looking at all of the sites associated with the same google webmaster account,

Google is hard to reach, but the people picking up the phones are just that - people. A kind word will go a long way. I once called Google and got advice on how to stop competitors from bidding on the company name, including the whole trademark process and potential pitfalls.

Yeah, I wasn't doubting OP's story, was just wondering what kind of floodgates that might open up..!

Remember though, it's not like a bunch of guys at Google UK necessarily have some major inside info on the functioning of the algorithm, they probably know pretty much what's common knowledge anyway - still, a few eyebrow-raising comments in there, like the manual review thing :O

    Hi seomachester2011,
Rather than trying to contact 'Google in the USA' you would be much better off trying to make conversation with the Kremlin. The reason you got a response at all is probably because UK Google are relatively new. If anyone else calls that number that you supplied asking for the woman by name will more than likely cause a definite end to any openness in the future (a Google UK internal lesson learnt).

Also you I think you mentioned that if your site is refused by Adsense twice it is a long term problem. Do you think you may have mistaken the word 'Annual' for 'Manual' (as in annual review)? A manual review makes no sense at all (at least not to me).

As the guy above said, nothing new...

Basically Google told you to build a website that has some sort of worth other than affiliate marketing. Make it look somewhat presentable and never misleading. Then and only after the user experience is met you should use ads to generate revenue for your hard work.

I think the hard work part throws people off. They figure making any attempt at all to develop a site and web presence is enough to earn a reward. After a while you just get told you were not paying attention to some clearly stated rules.

Exactly...It's all about creating a site that Google wants to include in their SERP results.

Basically, that wasn't really Google and what they told you, well... is useless. Oh the naivete of some people here.

A couple affiliate links and an inner page with a big banner didn't get your site killed.

Too much affiliate link on your page could send the wrong signal, I read something about using more than 1 affiliate link on a page could drastically take you down whether deliberately or unknowingly by the search engine.

This is very possible, remember when Google stopped ranking affiliate links in their SERP? Remember when Google adword stopped accepting affiliate links? I do advice my clients to keep their affiliate links low.

Their are also other reasons why ranking can drop drastically like the use of spamming links, over optimization of your anchor e.t.c.
