OK. I found a great niche. Good Search. Low PR comp. Problem

My main .com is gone. SO say its learn to swim .com

learntoswim .com

But all the .nets, .orgs, and hyphenated is still available.

The owner has told me she wold sell the .com for 197, but thats more than I'm willing to spend on a niche. May not work after all, I could always go back and get it later really.

SO

Should I got with learntoswim .net? .org?

OR

Would it be better to go with learn-to-swim .com

I get my keyword boos AND I get a .com

I think hyphenated is my best bet

what do you guys think?

Personally I would go with the .net or .org. While there is no difference in how well you can rank with hyphens my testing has show you get slightly less click throughs when you have two or more of them. One does not seem to make a difference but it seems that some people will pass over multi-hyphens and click the next ranking site. Not a huge difference with two but I believe it was just over 7% less clicks tested over three different niches.

Although I have sites with hyphens that do well, however not multi-hyphens, I do think you should avoid it. Ranking a site does not depend on the sites name so much. The other benefit from a good site name is word of mouth and branding. If you plan to do anything other than search engine rankings with this site then you should definitely go with a branding name.

Hyphenated domains are ok, i personally do not use more than 2 hyphens in domain.

Well how much realistically could you see yourself making from this site/niche? 197 doesn't seem that bad if you can make that back. Also, you will position yourself a lot better for ranking in the serps if that domain has some age to it. Take a look at it.

it depends on how many hypen are there on the URL. for example, if it is more than three hypens , I would stay away and decide to use a .net instead. One benefits it that it is easier to type for people and to be remembering. The other beneift is that people who search the .com may want to search the .net too (well depending on how savvy the person is though)
