How Do Automated Queries Affect SEO?

Google ToS basically says that using automated queries to look up rankings or submit pages is against their policy. But how does that exactly affect those doing it? At most i see a temporary block against that person's IP, but to affect SEO..?

I can see that they're against it, but I don't see how they would be going after people doing it. Perhaps someone in the know can explain this to me.

    If they see you burning up their resources from your own IP and you have websites with Adsense then they will ban your accounts. That's one measure they take to prevent abuse.

        Then the likelihood is you won't be burning up their resources. It's mostly seo and seo tools that data mine Google.

        I'm sure it's very costly, so they take it seriously. What they do shouldn't affect you unless you aren't being sensible..

        I can't comment on it affecting SEO, it's unlikely, but like I said if you keep mining data and you're not using private proxies then they could ban your adsense and deindex your websites.
