Is buying a directory listing ever worth it. I am trying to SEO a website it a competitive niche and I noticed that some of my ranking competitors have purchased directory submissions. Should I do the same?

Paid directory listing will help you to get link juice. But it is expensive way like yahoo directory will cost you $299/year, so it'll be much better if you spent this amount on getting high page rank backlinks.

If I were you, I would save the money and concentrate on creating an excellent freebie/blog post to send to other sites free. Or create a simple YouTube video etc. Great content is shared and will generate more valuable backlinks than any $299 directory listing.

It depends - if the listing will generate traffic, then it can be worth it. For example, I'm about to pay $150/month for a link that will generate 20 targeted visitors per day, and these visitors convert at around 30% (they gave me a free 7 day trial of a sponsored link). I don't ever buy links for the SEO though - that's just an added bonus.

It really depends on the price of the listing, but yes I believe it's worth it.

Some paid directories have a free version. You may try the free version to see if it produces some leads, then purchase the upgraded listing if you're wanting more results.

Spending money on directories? It would be better if you spend money on guest blogging and Press Release as you can plenty amount of traffic and high quality backlink through it.

I just got an awesome link in the Resources pages of an authority site in the same niche, and it costs nothing, just a polite request or submission. Just got to look around a bit and use your imagination. Of course, your site can't suck...

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

I don't think it is good to spend money on directory buying, unless this could bring lots of traffic and targeted visitors. But my site is not the case.

Of course it's worth it. You get a solid one-way permanent link.

    Directories are still worthwhile.

For instance, many of the keywords I track have results ranked on the power of links coming from link directories (including uncategorized, low quality "directories" that are obviously meant only for backlinking and SEO purposes). Google does not appear to have targeted those kinds of links at all, no matter how low the quality or obvious the manipulation. Those kinds of links have been working for many, many years, and still are.

My own analysis also indicates that Google wants to see more variation in anchor text now than before the Penguin update. Many results that were doing heavy exact-match keyword linking aren't ranking well anymore.

    1. Stay away from sitewide links.
    2. Stay away from PAID directory links until they are yahoo or similar high authority directory links as you can find lots of free directories as well over the internet.

      - Agree

I have hundreds of sites still using both Footer and Blogroll type links with no issue. I used one only yesterday to rank a couple of local keywords.

I think it is highly dependant on the link, niche and website.
