Alexa rating is dropping

Hi all,
I have a directory online that in the beginning received a high score with Alexa and for the next three months was climbing very rapidly 'till I hit position number 172k globally and 24,000 in the US.

In the beginning of this month it started to drop and it is dropping rapidly as it climbed up before.

Why is dropping? I am taking care of every aspect of the site and I am getting 2000 visitors per day, but yet it keeps dropping. Can you shade some light on this enigma?

      I agree with the above.
From my experience I've noticed that Alexa gives a little better rankings for new websites in the beginning and then takes that credit back

I know most of you don't think much of Alexa, and you might be right. But, Alexa currently is the leading rating engine out there (Please do tell me if there is one better). Look at it's first one hundred sites. Do you think the ranking is incorrect?

On the other hand, I can see the point of "rather visitors then ranking". But for someone who wants to sell his site later on, Alexa Ranking should mean a lot.
and correct me if I am wrong isn't it that google is looking at your Alexa rating?

Again, I reserve the right to be wrong

That is surely all it can measure, or pretend to.

          Not necessarily.

It's true that the "Alexa rankings" may have some slight relevance to people with internet marketing sites who are trying either to sell them or to sell advertising space on them, whose target markets may comprise partly people naive enough to attribute to those "Alexa rankings" any credibility or significance, but it has absolutely no relevance to anyone or anything else at all, and the sooner you forget about it, the better. And the sooner everyone else does the same, the better, too, because that way I can put in a lower bid for the domain-name I regard as "rightfully mine" ...

I've certainly never heard this one before (and believe me: I've inspected closely the entire syllabus of the Urban Myth School of Internet Marketing), and my own theory is that if Google's ever had a sneaky glance at it, it's been only for the ironic amusement value.

          You are right.

          1. So far the only worldwide accepted traffic indicator is Alexa Rank. Despite its flaws and inaccuracies and the fact that it is relatively easy to manipulate Alexa Rank gives the necessary reputation to websites. Some even pay to boost their Alexa Rank in order to attract customers.

          2. The better Alexa Rank certainly will increase the selling price of your website

Personally I've found that my sites rise and fall for a while. In other words, while their ranking in everything might increase for the first few months, after a while they start to slip, no matter what I try. Then a few months later, they come back up, this time for good. So if your site is reasonably new, it might just settling in and might rise back up more gradually but more permanently later. I wouldn't sweat it.

        Hey Exodor,

Alexa Smith in her post sums up all that Alexa does. As far as numbers are concerned you should be focusing on the number of unique and repeat visitors rather than the Alexa score.

Lets look at it this way. Would you prefer to have 2000 visitors a day and an Alexa score of 800K or 500 visitors per day and an Alexa score of 200K. I would go for the former. Because the money I make would be directly proportional to the number of visitors (everything else remaining same) rather than the Alexa score. And the numbers given below are perfectly viable.

If you have 2000 visitors per day and those do not have the Alexa tool bar installed then they will not be considered for your Alexa rating thus resulting in a bad Alexa ranking. However if in the second case out of 500 visitors coming everyday to your site you have 400 having the Alexa tool bar installed then I would not be surprised if you get an Alexa ranking much better than the the previous case.

My suggestion would be not to worry much about it as long as all other parameters like unique visitors, repeat visitors and the income look healthy.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers

Well to me Alexa score does not have any value except I consider to sell my site
However you can install their status bar in your browser, their stat widget in your site and keep your site open whenver you are online, refresh the site couple of times and this will increase your ranking rapidly again.

Like some of the other replies indicated, Alexa really isn't the end-all-be-all of the Internet, but I can still understand why it comes across as important. If you have about 15 to 20 minutes a day to spare, this strategy can help. But it takes consistency. Good luck.

Don't forget to also run Alexa's results against the other majors, especially Majestic SEO.

i thought alexa rankings measure traffic. It cant just measure traffic from alexa toolbar users can it? I guess that would make sense since its the only logical way to track the ranks

Alexa ranking is also directly related to your bounce rate.
so, you may have to adjust your sales copy or put some call to action
that will hold a customers attention.

I would not worry too much it only depends on who has it installed. What i found did help was if you install their widget on your website. Then it tracks every visitor (if its on every page)

Why dont you get some US adf.ly or adfoc.us views? They will help you get your ranking fast as they are very targetted and decent for inflating the alexa ranking.
