Backlink anchor text ratio / Keyword density

I was checking the backlinks of my competitors sites which are ranking on page 1 in the SERPs after the Penguin update. One site has around 90% of the backlinks using the same anchor text which is the keyword they are ranking on page 1 for.

I checked the sites keyword density, and the keyword only has a 0.55% density. Has anyone noticed a correlation between the anchor text ratio and on page density for sites affected by Penguin?

Does it seem that Penguin is hitting sites which have a combination of a high ratio of the same anchor text with a keyword density above a certain amount?

Another possibility is that the backlink checker you're using isn't reporting the whole picture. Afraid none of them are able to do it on their own. Majestic and OSE seems to be the best combo, but even then they are 25% - 50% short on the backlink counts.

Is the anchor text a branded term? Like their domain name or something ?

Yes, the anchor text is their domain name.

So for example ..the keyword is Best Chicken Wings.

Their domain is BestChickenWings.com and most of their anchor text are like:
        BestChickenWings.com
        BestChickenWings
        http:/www.bestchickenwings.com

If so, then they most likely won't be hit.

Are the backlink sources spammy (blog comments, profiles, etc) or more legitimate looking ?

Yup benefits of an EMD. If the site was bobschickenshack.com and all their anchor text was "best chicken wings" they probably won't still be #1.

I really doubt the keyword density has anything to do with it.

That's when you point the links at an internal page, then point a link from the internal page to the Index page with the same anchor-text (best chicken wings) your trying to rank for:

            hxxp://bobschickenshack.com/best-chicken-wings/

Oddly, when I checked their site at Backlink watch, it only shows about 20 backlinks using the anchor text keyword out of about 250 total links.

Before, I checked using opensiteexplorer.org. Im not sure which is more accurate.

Most of the backlinks are either from articles or look like they are from fairly low quality sites or sites that no longer exist.

This is what I'd guess. Ever since the closing of YSE it's been much harder to truly analyze your competition. I know there are alternatives, but Yahoo Site Explorer still trumps them all.

In my niche there are sites with really high keyword density and anchor text still ranking in the top #10 since Penguin. I just lowered my Keyword density to < 1%. I'll let you know if my site creeps back up to top 5.

Respond here in this thread if a month goes by and I forget.

Less than 1% for sure. 2 or 3% density for keywords in an articles is extremely high. Lower keyword density is better than higher keyword density. Keyword in the title is much more important than keyword density as well.
