Do I keep trying for #1 or start on another?

I finally got my keyword to page #1 of google (#8 overall) and I'm still working to get #1. Its been about 3 weeks since I started and my question is, do I continue to keep optimizing my site on top of what I have or do I let it sit and wait for google to crawl on all the backlinks I have (I have hundreds not even caught by google yet) and let that bring my rank up?

I'm sure my rank should get to #2 or #3 based on what I have if crawler bots stumble upon my links because there my competition isn't SEO optimized so they easy enough to take out.

I can start looking for another keyword and try to rank that site if I get enough opinion on this.

And my other question is if my competition isn't SEO optimized (Less than 25 BL, outdated sites, no new content, etc) why haven't I passed them up yet?

Well one of things Matt Cutts said with the Penguin update is that they would be rewarding sites who don't do any seo at all. So maybe that is something you are seeing in your niche.

It might just be google rewarding older sites that haven't done any seo, and pusing quality content to the back of the line. Thanks google.

Also, I would go ahead and start a new site while you are still ranking your other site. I would let your other site sit for a few days or a week and watch your rankings while you start your other site. But also you can work on both sites at the same time.

Sounds great; gonna start another site now. Got $$$ so I can get a EMD for the next keyword I target.

I also have to ask, if you underline, italicize, and bold your keyword in your blog does that improve your rank? I saw that my competitors did that and I just did it my site and jumped 3 ranks (#5 now and versing no.1 site). Wanted to know if its temp or perm

Depending on the profitability of your targeted keyword, I would suggest pushing it up to at least Top 3. The % of traffic you are getting for #1 and #8 is far too great to give up if you were in a profitable niche.

However as you stated, you have some backlinks still left uncrawled by Google and I would give it 1-2 weeks to finalize your rankings and decide where you should go from there.

For bolding and italics, yes it helps your onpage SEO and it is not temporary.
