Keyword "tags" in wordpress and google..

OK, I know google does not use these "tags" that you put in your posts in their rankings. However, are they still valuable? I mean, do the google bots see them and at least use them to quickly learn more about what your site is about?

Should I even waste my time using tags other than for my own organization?

The search engines will use tags as one of the ways they identify all the content on your site, and they use categories in the same way.

Using both categories and tags in a disciplined manner will contribute to the optimisation of your site.

I always add tags to my posts. Never split tested tags vs. no tags though. I just assumed it works. Plus it only take about 1 second to copy and paste all my keywords into the tags, so that's what I do.
