this makes sense, because How Google now rank a webpage? also if Google penalize the backlinks how you stop that different peoples backlink your website? for example the worst website has less backlinks so now we need to open unpopular websites with good content to get the rank #1 on google? any popular website will be linked in many forums, blogs and social networks.

It doesn't sound right. If Penguin isn't link based why did Microsite Masters case study find that every site they analyzed which got hit by Penguin has over 65% of their anchor text targetting the keyword.

I had a link partner email me saying that they were removing their links to my site and I should do the same to them because of penguin.

I know people dont all like reciprocal links, but other do. Ironically this is a pet site that doesnt want to link to my high PR dog sites. We are in the exact same niche and good power on our homepages ... I think some people are getting bad advice from people spruiking seo services ...

I agree that there seems to be quite a bit of misinformation, not to mention conflicting information. But the fact is, many people have been hit hard by google lately, and nobody seems to REALLY know why. It seems to me, we won't get any absolute answers until an employee at google decides to go rogue and spill everything he knows.

There seems to be way more human reviewing going on than google admits. Making it almost impossible to reverse engineer their code. How could you, when you don't know what was caused by the system and what was caused by humans?

I guess my question would be, what's the point of trying to reverse engineer Google to begin with? People know when they spam links with their keyword in the anchor text, for example, that they shouldn't be doing that.

I can see the value in understanding how Google works on some level when you want to rank, but trying to "break the code" in terms of figuring out how to game the algorithm at every stage is a losing game in the long run.

About a year ago, I was a "lone voice" trying to tell people here that back-linking is a foolish waste of time and money. At that time, most people were not interested in my advice. :p

EDIT: The video focuses on quality content, more than links, but some of you know that the above advice is still good.

How can backlinking be a waste of time and money when backlinks are still one of the main ranking factors even post penguin?

After watching this video for just 3 minutes, I realized that he's got his data so wrong. Listen to what he says about Google quality raters! Didn't Matt Cutts say that the data quality raters provide is never ever used by his web spam team? That's because, if they did use this data, that would screw up the stats provided by quality raters in its turn.

So, what quality raters do is they help evaluate Google's ranking algorithm to see how good it is. While mechanisms of identifying Web spam would be different. How come an SEO with so much experience does not know this?
