Hi

If you receive a message in GWT about quality issues or unnatural links... is this a manual action taken on your site or is it just a algorithm that has filtered your site (temporarely) out of the search results?

Thanks.

Most of the things the Big G do is by using the algorithm. but for the big sites and popular sites Sometimes they look these sites manually to know the link building techniques and quality contents as well as quality links.

Automated response. Not manual in your case I'm sure! What exactly did they send you?

Yes, this is an algorithm. Check your link profile with ahrefs.com to see where the problem lies. Unfortunately, as I pointed out in this recent blog (webbactivemedia.net/marketing-blog/285-google-penguin-for-negative-seo.html ) with the recent Google algorithm changes the problem may be out of your control to fix.

Be careful with those warnings, yes it is an automated algorythm as webmaster tools notifications (you cant reply!) so not much you can do,
check your backlinking, ahrefs.com is good for that majesticseo.com is also good and find out whats causing the problem,

quality issues is suspect of duplicate content issues which can be resolved by adding unique original content to the site. -- check other quality issues such as pagespeed, and user navigation, and minimize the number of ads, and over optimized content(keep on-page SEO still natural)!

un-natural linking is from suspect of using blackhat and webspam to generate link to your site. if you have done any fast methods of seo like building xxxxxxxx number of links quickly that is most likley going to lead to web spam. If you havnt done any link building then it could be some negative SEO from a competitor blasting your site with spammy links - combat it by building good quality, contextual, manual backlinks and make sure the anchor text is highly varied (use lots of your site name, url name, click here, website, visit website etc.. natural signals) as well as linking to multiple URLs on your site - dont just link to the homepage -
if you are interested in some quality links we offer great SEO packages no matter what budget you work with, and all our links are manual and super quality controlled!
PM me if you would like some help!

ps. check your site is not deindexed (this is the biggest issue) search google for site:yourdomain.com

if this happens (deindex that is - you can apply to google for reconsideration once you have fixed the issues they dissagree with ofcourse!)

    cheers
    Alex

my site is not de-indexed, I just appear on the fifth page for ALL my keywords when previously ranking on the top of the first page.

I fixed the "issue" 3 days ago (removed very bad content, what remains is now only high quality unique content), so how long does it take for Google to re-crawl and to implement this change in the index?

If your warning was only for having bad content, then give it some time. If you think that bad backlinks might be the issue, make sure to check into that as well.

Either way, I don't think 3 days is enough time to check - just wait for them to notice.

^^ This sounds exactly like the effect of Penguin/Panda,
as they are on going checks it doesnt have an effect right away, best thing is now that you have made your quality content on the site, send some high PR backlinks in the right direction to send a positive signal to google, you can recover your site very easily, some people see drops from #1 to #300 over night! (so seems like you have been in a lucky bunch... though yes top10 to top50 is a big blow you can get back there for sure!)

IF the penalty is lifted then I will get my rankings back as they were. So it doesn't work as you say. Penalties are never permanent.

In this case if you have solved the issues then yes they will bounce back - what I was saying about adding a few good quality signals is the speed this process as there is no telling how long it will take to bounce back and penalty is the wrong word its just causing movement

They have sent out over 1 million of these notices which tells me that there is an automated aspect to them. They'd have to have 20,000 workers just looking at links if it was all manual.

Matt Cutts said recently that algorithmic penalties did not generate notifications in WMT, and that if you received a notification it was the result of a manual inspection of your site. I find it hard to believe though that Google are investing that many people in manually inspecting websites.

It's definately automated. I think Google has been sifting out alot of bad content sites over the last week, probably due to the high amount of empty splogs or sites with duplicate content floating at the top of the serps. I got a notice for a video site that has some thin pages, it says to sort it out and resubmit, I guess they do this to cut down on workforce and let the webmaster do all the work, it's probably easier for them to answer a few reconsideration requests rather than check 10k splogs. If you got a notice then submit for a review.

I will wait about two weeks to see if anything happens, if not, I will submit a reconsideration request.

It's an algorithm change. But the most important thing is: DO NOT REPLY TO THAT MESSAGE!

Saying so is admitting to the big G that you have done something wrong and they'll spank you further.

      ↑ This here.

It's a trojan horse don't fall for it, lol.

If your still indexed, keep on going.

If that Google message was legit, they won't set a time limit on how soon you have to reply, which I think G is full of BS & sending out mass messages trying to get people to admit they built certain types of links.

Even If I wasn't right, what's the worse G can do?

If they haven't de-indexed the site, I doubt they care enough to do it later.

If G was going to de-index the site, they wouldn't be sending you a message, they would just slap the site & be done with it.

Build some quality links to a new page for the same keyword your currently targeting, build up authority for the same exact keyword.

It is an Automated message. If you Submit for Re consideration it will go for manual check and for sure you may get manual penalty.

That un-natural link warning in GWT was having also a line mentioned in that message that after you have fixed the issue you are required to send a reconsideration request so was a different than the recent penguin update.

Thus I believe you shall clean up bad links and then shall report Google in reconsideration request details of the cleanup to have your website ranking back.
