How long do you assume it would take to rank a local business from page 2 to page 1 of google? I'm targeting lawyers, plumbers, hvac, etc.

It depends on SEO that how you will do this. If you target only local visitors then it will rank approximately 2 to 3 months easily.

No one can give you a simple answer to that, there are so many factors you have to consider and each website and keyword is different...

Hey, its not easy to say that how much time it will take.

It depends on so many factors like:
    What keywords you are targeting?
    What is your competition and?
What strategy you are following to achieve your goal?

Hello! In my point of view, it mainly focuses on your targeted audience, the range of ages and careers of each one. If you focus on targeting the right ones, it's a sure one then. Also, keywords are important.

The only competition is basically domain age,the majority of the other sites don't have more than 3,000 backlinks to their domains and almost none to their pages. I'm trying to figure out how to give an estimated time when asked based on this information.

I would say depending on how competitive they keywords are, age of domain and content onsite it should take a couple months up to six months possibly depending again how competitive the keywords are. That is if you do it the slow and steady, the white hat way?

No one can predict that how much time it will take. But if you want to target niche audience then submit your site at google places by giving your actual physical address, and include a geographical map because google prefer those sites who have maps by using more specific local keywords to hit the targeted audience. This is the way you get soon your place in SERP and potential customers.

That much is true - have you built a few blogs around your keywords and given plenty of outbound links to local authority sites. This works for me.

The more important question is how long it will take you to get them to #1. For most local search terms the traffic is so small that only the #1 spot is going to get any reasonable amount of traffic.

Always give yourself more time than expected, you never know what the underlying issues may be or if you will get access to the website and listings quickly. Although if you are targeting those industries in big cities it could take a while without some professional backing.

SEO depends on a lot of factors such as competition. You can never say you can rank it on an exact number of days without analyzing the factors in SEO.

You can rank low competition trade-related keywords in a day. But it could take months to rank for a competitive keyword. Usually, trade-related keywords have a moderate competition but without know specially what term you're targeting, I can't give you a more accurate ballpark figure.

      That explains yes.

If I get them at the first page within a month they cancel the month after.

If they don't rank fast enough they cancel, if they do rank fast enough they cancel.

Really have to go sit and think about it some time.

Wow... There are some terrible answers on this page... Don't worry I'm not calling you out... No I wasn't talking about you... LOL

Look, it all starts with analyzing your market. Why are the there? Look for the indicators. Page rank is not the sole reason somebody ranks locally, but look at the page rank. If all the sites have a huge page rank on the front page for your keywords, you have some work to do. Then start to look at their title tags, meta tags. See what they did. Look at what they built the site out of. I use wordpress for local clients, it does half my work for me and I'm lazy, yep I just admitted to that. But I'm good... Look at their content, see how they laid it out. Look for "H tags", this will tell you if they know what they're doing or did they just get lucky. Look at their link structure, maybe they just got there with nothing more than a good link structure, it happens, I do it all the time. Look at their xml sitemaps, get an idea of how they structured their site. Look at their image optimization, this one's a little hidden gem. Not for this place, maybe one day. It's really hard to look at their backlinks now a days, but try to find their links and get one there too.

There is no local market that cannot be taken when you do the right things.

I have ranked lawyers in as little as 5 days to the bottom on the page and took the top in less than 10 days. And may I add, with a brand new domain... Other markets require a whole lot more work.

    Have Fun,

All excellent advice. Caveat on Page Rank. Matt Cutts announced in October that there's not going to be PR updates for the rest of 2013, and didn't make further note on the future of PR. I would take PR with a large lump of salt on any given day, but even more so now.

I work for an agency that works exclusively with law firms, and it can be incredibly competitive for some locations and practice areas. We can get front page rankings within months for important long-tail, more specific search phrases (e.g. drug lawyer in New York City). Those tend to convert more leads than the broader phrases such as "Personal Injury Lawyer Los Angeles", which can take up to a year to rank from obscurity with a new website.

I highly suggest a lot of market research. It's not enough to say that "yes, I can rank you within a week", if those are for keywords that will never convert or see a hit. I also like emphasizing monthly leads instead of specific rankings. Some attorneys are determined to rank for vanity keywords, when they can get a lot of leads by focusing on the long-tails. Manage those expectations well.

      Best of luck.

competition can change too, you could be chasing medium keywords today, tomorrow its high, but if your on page 2 now , your in great position , just be careful who you use to get you there.

It depends on the competition for the keywords you want

    book binding Hicksville

will rank a hell of a lot quicker than

    book binding New York

    will rank quicker than

    Book Binding.

I just did a local site for a guy in San Luis Obispo and got rank for all the local towns just from the site structure. No off page SEO and it took literally as long as the site took to index.

Finished site and BANG he got rank (His domain is old but it was a flash site so he had rank of ZERO for everything at the start of the build).

Population of the town is only 44,000 though

Wouldnt want to speculate though on how long it would take in a bigger city for the same keywords - as said above - thats a 'how long is a piece of string'? question.

My local site in Adelaide (1.1 million) took a couple of months, initially.

I just got bashed on the last Google algorythm update and lost rank for every keyword.

Im crawling back up in SERP now but its taken weeks, and thats with on-page and off page work being put in consistently. I dont expect to be back where I was for a coupl'a months, at least

    .

it depends on the competitiveness of the keyword. In my country, any keyword i target with the country name included or one of our cities including, i easily rank within weeks because no one is doing SEO here.

No one can answer you the exact time period within which you can achieve the desired goal. But since you are optimizing local website, competition level must be comparatively lower. So, if optimized properly you can achieve 1st page rank within 3-4 months. Domain age also matters. If the websites are old then it might be more easier for you to achieve the goal.
