How important is an EMD?

As the title states, how important is an exact match domain? I've literally researched hundreds of keywords, and everyone of them has .com, .net, and .org taken. It seems like I can't find any available domains!

Thanks

It is helpful but not the be all and end all. If that were the case authority sites would all be penalized. Don't forget though that you can add "drop" words or numbers to the domain and it still gets 95% of the same value an EMD would get. E.G.

    greentree .com

    you could also use

    greentrees .com
    greentreesx .com

as the X is clearly a separate word google will discount it when they match terms. It also same goes for the S although if you have a keyword which is singular often adding and s to make it plural is a benefit rather than a negative.

What sort of site are you making?

I don't think they have the advantage they used to and google may well be suspicious of EMD's for trophy keywords until they have a few authority backlinks.

I actually avoid EMD's that have traffic and choose a generic brand name with the keywords in the URL and title.

I'm trying to build micro niche sites, alot of the keywords don't have any emd's available it seems like.

EMDs currently carry a lot of weight on the Google SERPs. However, the importance of EMDs as a search ranking factor has led to some unforeseen consequences, such as lesser known companies showing up ahead of brands that are better known and more highly respected.

There’s no denying that exact match domains (EMDs) currently carry a lot of weight on the Google SERPs. I've been buying quite a few non .com emds of late ( .me .co etc ) and the .me went straight in at page 2 number 5 ( 15th ) for a very competitive pharmacy keyword. With a a few hundred high pr no follow links ( pr 4-7 ) it went to number 4 but has now settled at number 6 or 7 ( depending on time of day ). I think it's safe to say they still provide some ranking advantage but they can of course be beaten with better links and a non emd domain. Personally I'd go with a non .com emd rather than a keywordx.com type domain.

To save your time and quickly find available domains search in Google for Godaddy bulk search and click on the first result. That is the bulk domain checker by GoDaddy.

However, after Penguin EMDs have much less power for Google is literally fighting against website optimization.

The extension .com, .net, .info whatever has no effect on SEO. Most of my micro niche sites are now .info for this reason and i have loads on page one.

The only thing you could say it MIGHT have an impact on is user confidence. People have had .COM pushed on them so much since the internet became the playground of the general public that it is believed many people place more trust in .com's over other extensions.

I would also point out though that sales on my .info's seem no better or worse than my .com's this year.

thats very interesting on the .info , have to fire up long tail pro and check that out tomorrow, its does get frustrating on the com, net,org deals, or finding some jewel, and mister daddy wants big bucks for premium .com price . all comes down to spending hours on there sometimes, no biggee , i enjoy it , fire some music up in ear phones go digging.

It also makes a fair difference when you factor in the overall costs of setting up lot and lots of mini niche/sniper sites. Considering there are always some that will never rank or make a dime it help negate risk factor.

Not by much but every little helps when looking at the bigger picture.

well being a company we have to give it more thought. The problem is to motivate customers to work the site after they get them. Its not like your laying tar on a roof in Alabama in the summer time. motivation is the key along with knowledge.

I've been testing EMD's a lot post penguin and in my opinion they're not worth it. I don't see the ranking advantage they used to have and many look spammy to searchers.

Choose a short snappy brand domain and put the keywords in the URL, title and H1 - this is working much better for me.

    EMD is always valuable.
It seems like I can't find any available domains!
Add a phrase first or last of your keyword and then try.

If you are a content website and your sole motive is monetization with content, then EMD is important for you. Whereas, for a service providing website or for a product website, EMd is not important. For such websites, it's better to have branded domains.

You can try including one hyphen between your keywords.
Do not use more than one hyphen as it appear spammy.
