Determining Google Indexation?

Someone please help me determine how to sort out whether Google has indexed some of my work and if so, if someone else has been credited with the indexation rights.

A couple years ago, it appeared that an archive of around 200 articles (newspaper columns) that I authored was accidentally published on an open website of one of the newspapers I used to write for. I say, "Open" website because the articles were only suppose to be published on the newspaper's pay/portal site where Google could not index them.

Shame of me for not publishing them on my site first before releasing them but "who knew" they were going to be released/published on an open portal. Live and learn.

Needless to say, when I learned what had happened and that I had no doubt lost the indexation rights on the columns there was large amount of anxiety flying around. When the newspaper realized what had happened they immediately removed all my work. I always considered them doing so, (correct me if I'm wrong), much like closing the barn door after the cow was out --- it was too late, the damage had already been done.

Yesterday I ran the 200 articles in question through Copyscape. They all came up "Zero" for possible plagiarism (highlight) detection. The positive results from Copyscape pose new questions. Did the results come back zero because the articles have been pulled from the Internet "OR" does Copyscape have the ability to also go back into the way back machine where previously published material "might" be? I say, "might" because I never knew for sure if the articles in question were indeed published on an open portal where they could be indexed. By the time I found out about the problem, the newspaper had already taken everything down.

There is a possibility that the columns in question were either never indexed "or" never released outside of a controlled access site where Google's spiders could crawl and index them.

Is there a way to tell if a piece that has been pulled from the Internet has been indexed and if so who was credited with the original indexation rights?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
