Are backlinks made/bought to increase traffic in themselves or simply to improve the Google PR and increase traffic based on the new search results?

Ohhh yeah and if I were to purchase a backlink creation service from multiple Fiverr providers will it be frowned upon? I am sure to some level it is acceptable but I read a couple days ago about a site having 20,000,000 - certainly that would be unacceptable for a domain with no age?

The real purpose of backlinks is to show Google that your important and other people are linking to your site. Too many sites have done artificial backlinks that has made Google become more sophisticated with their security and ranking.

Backlinks can provide SEO value and referral traffic to your website. SEO will help you improve your ranking in the search engines.

You can get referral traffic to your websites by having quality content linking to your (quality) website. Whether that be from related blogs, comments, article sites etc.

I assume that purchasing backlinks from Fiverr people would not get me much of that traffic as they are basically spamming (and in bulk) with no discretion of the relationship to my site's content no matter how good my content is correct? Still could be "some" PR advantage though using this method?

Backlinking is very important.
My ranking has increased due to good quality backlinking. You have to diversify your links, and not do thousands at a time which looks unnatural to Google.

Higher Google Ranking = higher traffic

Backlinks are one aspect that determine your site's ranking. The more quality and the quantity of your backlinks, the more higher your site will be in Google Search Result.

  I understand that, my question I meant to gear in the direction of aside from the PR increasing were there any immediate direct traffic increases based on the backlinks themselves, or is traffic increase only forthcoming when the PR increases.
  
  I think I got the answer though, insight was appreciated however.

They can do both if done well, or they can lose you traffic, or even get your site deindexed, if done badly. To do them well, you need to make them look as natural as possible, to Google. That means a wide range of different types of backlinks, it means overall more backlinks from the more popular sites, etc.

High quality backlinks work for both. Backlinks are made for increasing ranking. When you you rank high then you you can get more traffic from SERP.

back-links are used to increase website rankings and getting traffic from it is a different thing because you will have to be very smart when commenting on a site so that you can get traffic from your created links.

It depends on which type of backlinks you are going after. For instance, blog commenting could be seen as a way to backlink a site for seo purpose. However, blog commenting can also be a way to direct traffic to a webpage.

This being, forum profiles for example are a type of backlinks that is not likely to bring you a lot of traffic as far as I can tell.

To search engine, backlinks from quality website suggests that your website might have 'similar' quality contents as your reference site and also it means your website are popular among your niches.
But please beware of buying backlinks services, it might bring down your ranking if your backlinks are from 'poor' quality website. ..

It's all about referral traffic. If you have enough quality content linking to your website. From other quality pages, related blogs, comments etc google will view your website in a better light or as a provider of quality to it's users.. You'll be rewarded with higher ranks with the more of these you get.
