You can try local listing on Google places and other local directories like yelp, Hotfrog. Try to find niche directories and local websites which accept travel websites.

More importantly is HOW you build links.

Paul gave a good resource for ideas on building links, but you need to build links differently these days. Don't use your keyword as the anchor text for every backlinks. Don't just backlink the same page over and over again, make sure you are backlinking internal pages and pages that you aren't even "optimizing" for.

Remember, natural is key these days. Don't be out of the norm or you could be out of the rankings.

My safe link building strategy will be:

Making useful contribution by doing Guest Blogs of relevant niche.
Social Bookmarking of my content
Sharing my content on social media websites to get back links (after the penguin update back links from social media websites has now more importance)
Blog Comments (relevant niche, do follow/no follow both to give it a natural look)
Web Directories (High PR)

I have to agree with an earlier comment that linking in forums is good for targeting traffic, but not great for ranking in Google. I'm having to concentrate on organic linking in order to improve my results in the SERPs.

I like the responses people gave as list. I will include wiki submissions, profile links(only if you know which ones, forum links will do), social bookmarking, link baiting, blog directory submission, .edu links and some .gov links for extra seo push. You need more authority links more then anything now.

I noticed that profile links from High PR sites are still working nicely post Penguin...But do it manually.Write a 200 word content with your keyword and use it in your profile[ About me sections] , this adds extra value.Forum signature links will help you to drive targeted traffic.

We use three core linking methods in our business:

1. High quality press releases
2. Social Indicators - bookmarking and social sharing
3. Private High PR Networks

Occasionally we may add:

4. Manually created profiles on high pr authority sites including Wikis
5. High PR Edu links

The end result comes down to how the links are built, using those sources above if you blasted 10k links overnight you would likely wind up at the same result as blasting 10k blog comments overnight (and indexing them) - do i know that for a fact, no.

The point I am making is do your link building to money sites consistently, manually, using unique content and without worrying. To your tier 1 links, be as link happy as you like although generally our tier one links are only back linked with social bookmarking and blog commenting or article distribution.
